Handing out CV's in advance

Was hoping for some opinions from any managers/recruiters etc.
I Will be leaving my current job and moving across the country in a few months as I feel stuck in a rut in my current position and an opportunity for a more or less hassle free living arrangement has become available.
Now its a bit of a risk on my part as I will be going there with a couple of months worth of pay saved up and no job, what I was thinking about was going over there for a day or two and dropping off my CV to prospective employers to try and sow the seeds as it were, but would it be worth it? would they just read my note explaining I wont be around until a few months time and just bin it? or would they actually file it until I am in the area and start spreading my name around again.

This is not the sort of risk I would normally take and am wanting to be as prepared as possible so I am not without a job for too long when I get there, so any suggestions from anyone else that has done this would be great.

What sort of positions would you be applying for? Bit odd to go and hand them out for any 'professional' role. Why don't you surf and click?

How unique are you? How special are the skills?

If the answer to either are not very I would say you are wasting your time.

unsolicited approach won't get you far imo. i would say there is probably something to be gained by sending out a concise CV & covering letter to the manager of the relevant dept. of your target firms. linkedin may also help.
