Requesting a reduced notice period

Notice periods are pretty much unenforceable anyway, I wouldn't worry about it until you need to leave. If they need to get rid of you though you'll be glad of it. I've had 3 months notice in my contract at a few jobs and have never worked more than one, it's not really practical.

When you want to leave give them the date that you want to leave on. They can only either make you work your full notice or say thats ok. No one wants someone around that doesn't want to be there any longer than they have to be. Most of the time you can get away with the leaving date you want.
