I haven't but if someone did apply for a role with a company in direct competition and their current employer found out through a breach of confidentiality would it/could it be a legit' reason to be shown the door?

What would be the reasoning? the faith has been lost in their decdication the the company?

Tell "your friend" to be very careful what they do with their current employer e.g. copying (stealing) company data, sales lists etc

It may depend on what is in the contract, and how enforceable any restriction is.
