Career change - Estate Agency/Car Sales???!!!

I have had a search through the posts on here but didn't find much.
I am considering a career change. I currently work in the leisure marine industry selling boats - new and used (brokerage). With the current economic situation things aren't great. I have already been made redundant a couple of years ago from one company but was fortunate to find another job fairly quickly, however due to low sales my earnings have not been great. Also if things carry on as they are where I am now I don't think it will be long before I will be searching the classifieds again. It has crossed my mind to change careers before as I would rather enjoy boats as a hobby again (if I can afford it!) than work with them.
I'm 37 and have only really worked in the marine industry. I got into it as when I left school I was unsure of what I really wanted and I liked boats. So I went to college and got a marine industry based HND. Other than that I have good GCSE's and 3 A levels. I don't really want to/can't afford to go back and retrain so need to get into something that I can easily transfer my skills to and learn on the job. I like to think I am reaasonably intelligent and can turn my hand to most things.
Despite the mocking that estate agents generally get I think it is a job I would enjoy. Getting out and about and meeting differnt people. I realise that it may not be the best time to be looking to get into that sort of thing but it must be better than boat sales seem to be right now? The only other industry I can see my current skills leading to is car sales but I'm not so sure I would enjoy that.
So any estate agents on here - do you think my current job would be a good lead into estate agency? Given the current slump in house sales is this some thing I would be stupid even to consider? What is the basic salary like for an estate agent in the south west and what sort of commission could I hope to earn in the current climate? Ideally I would like to progress (eventually) to a more upmarket estate agent that deals with coast and county type homes as there are plenty of those in this neck of the woods. During my work in boat sales I have had some very well off clients so I think that experience would help.
Otherwise does anyone have any other career suggestions that I should look at?

Hi Jay, have you considered Medical Sales? I am have been in that industry for 10 years and there are lots of opportunities. I believe a good salesperson should be able to move into almost any other sales job in any industry. If you have an idea of earnings etc let me know and I can help you. Paul
They only have high turnover if you can't hack it or sell!
I'd say that you would be able to find a job as an estate agent, I'd reccomend trying to find a decent agent though.
Two people I used to work with (I've been an estate agent, and a car salesman) moved from motor sales to estate agency and have done fairly well out of it!
Personally I was at one agency for about a year and was able to move onto one of the more prestigious ones as a junior, sadly got made redundant, but its all possible.
What area are you looking in?
Basic salary is going to be between £12-£18k I'd imagine for a new starter, can't comment on how much commision you'd earn, but the sky's the limit in the right place.

okgo - I live in Devon near Exeter. Ideally I would want to work for the likes of Savills, Strutt & Parker, Knight Frank etc but I'm not sure with my current lack of direct experience that they would want me, but you never know. So may have to start lower down the chain...
