Looking to upgrade the brakes on my 550i, are Stock M5 brakes any good for a little ring work? Also is £800 for the complete front setup a reasonable price if the disks are good nick?

IMHO, you would be better off investing in some better pads with your current setup..

The fact that you want to upgrade suggests that they were not up to the job. IMHO, many E60 M5 owners complain about brake fade around the track so the setup you're buying for ~£800 is probably off an owner who is upgrading to a superior kit. It's an alright price if there's some decent thickness left, but you get what you pay for. I don't see how one can own such a barge and have such a tight budget? Don't forget a new set of decent rubber all around will cost more than that and yes you will wear the rears out within a trip if driven properly!

The ring is not especially heavy on brakes, so if it is just for this purpose, upgrade the pads and fluid.....std discs will be fine really.

The OP has already done that. If your driving to the full potential and braking short and hard then an upgrade will probably be needed after 1-2 Ring laps!

If you want to go and spend money then do it, but the car doesn't really need it for one visit to the ring.
