I take it its normal to feel a 'bang/slight clunk/shove in your back' when upshifting at speed on the SMG II gearbox?

Dont know about any noise as such, but sure a huge kick in the rear transmission. You only get this with the gearbox setting above 3 or so. It cannot be very sympathetic on the mechanicals, so most back off the throttle during the change up. This does take some practice to master though. It seems fine to put your foot right down to the floor on or just before a down shift without any sort of kick.

Thanks. Been using setting 4 for 'spirited' driving but always leave foot down. Its hard to describe here but i certainly hear the gear change and feel the 'bang' from the seat which is kind of nice. Its clean but pretty full on.

I'm more used to newer cars which have had dual clutch/S tronic etc but this E46 gearbox whilst not being as slick/fast is nice having to learn and playing with the settings smile

I used to have an R35 GT-R and in some ways in the E46 i hear the similar mechanical changes and noises but just wanted to check its normal.

It's normal. Not smooth or refined, but dramatic and adds to the appeal of the car in my opinion, I like the rawness.

I don't do foot planted shifts tooo often though. More likely to be dropping cogs for the downshift blips smile

Yeah i really like that raw feel - adds to character of the car smile Just needed to check it was normal and nothing was possibly broke.
Will keeping my foot down in S4 whist upshifting damage gearbox longer term?
Likewise, should i keep foot down when downshifting when spirited driving?
