Hi,

I've recently become the proud owner of a Z4M Roadster. After a few teething problems (DSC failure and Powerhood refusing to retract, all sorted now, hood was user education + DSC BMW dealer replaced part) I'm now faced with a phone issue.

The car has satnav and BT, but for the life of me I can't get the car paired with my iPhone 3GS. I've seen a few threads on US websites but they tend to either "work staight away" or "I had to go to teh dealer"

Does anyone out there know how to get the car to enter "pairing mode"?

The phone works fine with our E92 330, pairs instantly.

Any help greatly recieved smile

The process is something like. Open the passenger door (but not fully), Scratch your arse with your left hand whilst pressing every button in the car in a specific sequence with the other.

Joking aside. Its a pain but you need to:

1. Turn on BT on your phone
2. Press the button on the phone cradle (in between the seats)
3. Turn key to ignition 1
4. Release button

This is from memory but if you do a search on the z4-forum.com and you will find the answer.

Hi P,

I'll give that a whirl tonight.

I had heard that you had to do a rain dance, then admit defeat and take to a dealer who would be equally bemused by it smile.

I also heard this gem...

1) Turn car on but not engine (position doesn't matter)
2) Press R/T button once
3) Radio says "Activate (pause) Phone (Pause) Activate (Pause) Phone
4) Go to phone, search for new devices
5) Phoen will find BMW##### (last 5 = last 5 of VIN)
6) Pair, follow instructions for phone etc

The most I've managed to get is "Searching" on start up but I believe it's "searching" for paired phones.

Pile of 4r$3 frown

This is an issue i've heard from a few people.

Do Z4M's have the pairing button on the snap-in cradle in the same way as the E46 M3 does?

I cant remember off the top of my head....

but i do think its one of those things that you try, try and try again... then just as you are about to give up it works!

even the dealer that did it with my first phone took a couple of goes to get the sequence and timing right

keep at it

Yes in the centre console (phone cradle) there's a bluetooth button. Thats the 1 I press for 3 seconds with the cars ignition on for it to show up. It actually shows 2 BMW's with mine, 1 that works for the bluetooth that shows up when I press the button, and 1 that is there all the time - not sure what it is.
You then have to enter the unique PIN that you get given with the car, or you can find it on a sticker on the control unit behind the cover in the boot (bit of an effort to get).

As other have said, make sure phone is on and discoverable etc, ignition to 1. press the pair button on the fold down flap between seats, searching should come on screen and then await instruction to enter code - as above if you don't have BT card root around to get to module in car.

with my HTC when I bought car it took dealer two attempts, when I went to an iphone 4 last year, it took about four attempts myself. each failed time I waited till time out and swithched car off then started again.

I had some issues setting mine up too

The trick is to press the button next to the snap-in thing (between the seats) as you turn the ignition on, and to NOT hold it down for 10 seconds (or whatever the instructions say)

I spent ages trying to set mine up following the hand book instructions, and then accidentally did it wrong... and it worked

Cheers for teh info guys,

I had heard about the console button, but when I tried it, nothing happened.

So if I've got it correct you...

1) press and hold the console button (in between the seats)
2) Turn ignition to 1 (still holding the console button?)
3) should get the display on the screen
4) pair phone using PK provided on card by BMW (Which I've now memorised)
5) crack open a cold one after all the effort to pair a phone. smile

I'll let you know how I get on.

Many thanks,

2.5) release the button

Once it detects the phone it's dead simple.

Yeah people often have problems as they press the button on the steering wheel which is the voice control one as it's the same picture..

I have successfully paired the phone with my Z4M!

Process went like this...

1) hold key in console flap for 3 secs
2) turn ignition to 1
3) on the screen you'll see the magical mythical beast that is "PAIRING MODE"
4) go to phone, your Bluetooth will now discover your Bm, mines went headset, then went BMW#####
5) click pair on phone, you'll then be asked to enter the PK
6) on the screen you'll see "PAIRING SUCCESSFUL"

Job done

Think I'll do a video of it as it is a mare to get right from the manuals with the car.

Thanks for all your help smile
