I know this is a personal choice thing but I thought its worth getting a few opinions on the subject.

OK my car is LSB in colour and has the 19" wheels. As they are a touch kerbed I am going to get them refurbished. I'm not a fan of the OE polished finish and thinking of something different — maybe anthracite or even satin black.

Thing is, I know that most owners or potential buyers like cars to be OE and unmodified.

Do you think the refurb in a different colour will look a bit chavvy and/or potentially harm a resale come the time?

Put it this way, I am a potential buyer, and I wont touch any that have had colour changes or non standard wheels fitted. I doubt I am alone.

I had mine done in Shadow Chrome, as I couldn't be bothered with the heartache of watching the standard finish go milky and corroded again.

Done at Lepsons in Gillingham.

Hi

Nottash & gaz1234 - Could I ask as to 'exactly' why you'd not consider a car that had these kinds of changes? If you saw an M3 that was all standard but had say, Hartge or AC Schnitzer wheels on it, would you still reject/not consider it? I 'think' I know what you guys responses will be, but perhaps there's other factors I've not thought of. I'm just curious really as I like to understand the reasons 'why' behind certain stuff in the BMW world !

OP - colour changes on wheels can come out looking stunning, and I agree with the view that polishing and re-lacquering will only go 'milky' again in 1 or 2 years time needing another refurb to remedy. Shadow chrome and other such subtle variants can indeed look great! have a look around for some examples of refurbed oem wheels and shortlist what you'd like to do!

Cheers, Dennis!

Some people just will not consider a modified car, regardless of how minor.

In terms of the wheels, imo anything other than a polished finish is an injustice to them. National Alloys will do them for about £300 which is a great deal considering the quality of the finish when they come back.

I keep looking at M3's and anything other than OEM style wheels puts me off a great deal. Anthracite is another word for "get away with a cheap" finish in my view. It was out of fashion before it even came into fashion.

Either get them done properly, and if them failing again is putting you off, swap to CSL wheels which are a proper multi-coat paint finish which should stay good for much longer!

Had mine finished in Satin black (silver car) and had a few comments 'they look nice'.

Don't you ever think they look like they are totally covered in brake dust though?

They can look cool covered in brake dust sometimes, but it's nice that you can wash it off.

Hmmm, not sure really.

I think they can look a bit cheap with certain aftermarket wheels, There are some that would look good but for me I would want standard, as Gaz says the CSL wheels really suit the car.
Ive seen a few painted anthrasite/ dark and really dont like them. It cheapen's it a bit if you know what I mean. Some of the ones ive seen for sale with different wheels are owned by people who lower them blacken the windows and piss around with them. Not for me.
Ive just bought one today, and its got 18s on it, not my first choice as i would prefer 19s but they are immaculate with new tyres on.

Reading your posts, it seems your mister picky, but you've bought a red m3 with 18 inch wheels. I've seen some nice red m3's but it low down most peoples colour wish list and isn't an easy resale either.
I'd have happily bought a car with darker wheels over a red car. You can change the wheels after all.

His car is Smurf Blue, so it's unlikely you'd be interested in it.

I love Imola Red - it looks fantastic on the E46 M3.

Silverstone?

I think it's a really nice colour... individual only though isn't it?

LSB = Laguna Seca Blue.

Silverstone is a normal M colour.

Ah yes, makes sense now, LSB is pretty smurf!

I'm in two minds on colours like that.

Phoenix, Imola and Laguna are all great colours, but at the same time a bit much...

I quite like Techno Violet on the M3.
