Sold my 550 and one of these is right up there as the next "toy". Budgets not huge and I don't really want to be shelling out for the best, lowest miles car as it will get used although not as a daily.
Are there any issues with the 2005/6 cars in the real world or is it all cosmetic as heard hype about getting a later model....

I ran a 55 plated M5 for 2 years and 30k miles and it was pretty reliable. Biggest issue was the fuel gauge stopped working and it took 7 visits back to the dealer until the eventually sorted it out.
Other smaller niggles over the 2 years but all sorted by BMW without question.
Consumables are what you would expect.
I wouldnt touch one that wasnt BMW AUC.

I have a late 2006 car and use it for longer, weekend drives.
Not one problem in 30000 miles.....literally nothing.
There were teething problems with early cars I believe, but most would have been dealt with under warranty.
There are loads of threads on here about these beasts.....great advice.....just do a search.
Make sure you drive a few.....and get one with the full BMW warranty (madness otherwise!)
Look forward to seeing the pictures soon!

05, 55 and 06 cars had some gearbox woes, ie. release bearings, SMG pump. The best ones are cars later than 56 (get a late 56 if it has to be a 56). Get an LCI car with the updated headlights and if you can stretch, a later car with the updated tail lights. The later cars will also have better Idrive and latest software for SMG and other computers. Try to get a car with a recent clutch and flywheel, that'll give you 40k peace of mind. Also ensure the discs & pads are very recent as they are pricey and dont last that long. Full leather is a must and must be FBMWSH to get the essential BMW Warranty. Fuel economy is obviously no issue but it'll only drink super juice just to remind you. Dont buy a car with sub standard tyres. Dealers have been known to put budget tyres on to make the car look like its get fresh rubber, not everybody checks the brand. Oil top ups are every 1k miles to 2k miles if you are a fast motorway driver. Top ups are circa 3k miles if you are a town or short trip driver. If the car is circa 30k miles, ensure its had the big service that comes around that time.
Dont drive in D mode as its crap. Get used to using the paddles (shift mode S3 or higher) and dont buy a car thats been launched (obviously you cant guarantee its not been launched) more than once. Too many launches can void a warranty and BMW can check on the cars memory.
Drive as many cars as you can before you buy, they are all slightly different.
Thats about it really. Enjoy!!

Personally I would struggle to class the E60M5 as a 'toy' largely because it only really starts to become mildly interesting 80mph+
It's such an accomplished car that does everything remarkably well then a fast wide track is the only place to prod its talents - and then you are into a world where there a far more interesting track focussed machinery. Just my opinion of course.

A 507 bhp V10?
The E60 M5 is one of the very best cars ever made....an awesome machine.
You do not have to drive it like you stole it to appreciate its power, balance and road presence.
So I beg to differ Sir!
M5's are not very exciting below 5k revs....they have to be revved to get the performance and this results in the thrills being at high speeds.....at lower revs the car is not very torquey and doesnt feel hugely special imho....A 507 bhp V10?

Hey listen, you are talking to a HUGE M5 fan. I don't deny its a fantastic machine - its awesome. My feeling here is that its too awesome to be called a toy - imho
Money aside, I would suggest an E60 M5 as a daily warrior that is everything to all men and something like an E30 M3 or a Z3 MR or MC as the 'toy'
