Hi guys,

I'm very bored of my daily driver, and fancy getting the M5 I've always wanted, but insurance is looking prohibitive. Is the m5 that bigger insurance pain at the moment? Are there any specialisits I should look into?

FWIW I'm looking at about 3X my cerbera insurance (albeit for more miles), and with all the other associated costs, it's just a little too much to make me make the jump. I thought the days of >£1K insurance were behind me... A e38 7 series may be the preferred option as I think they are hilarous value & an awesome place to sit, but given the value of some of the M5's now, and that I've always wanted one (and prefer manual cars), I'm tempted to just get one.

TIA

Stu

Try Classicline.. You may already know them if you have a TVR, When I switched across last year they saved me £350 on my Tuscan, and unexpectedly they beat my M5 insurance by £400, Give them a call they are superb to deal with.

It's cheaper than an E36 M3, that much I know.

Cheers Sagman, I'll give them a shout. EDIT: Your tuscan looks SUPERB. Awesome awesome car.

Tekno - Yeah frown There was a stunning estoril/black evo for sale locally. Very tempting, but some M5's are only 25% more for a much more modern/comfy car. I think the e36 overlaps the cerb a bit too much in many ways, whereas the M5 is a replacement for the daily, on steroids smile (Hence my thinking e38 7 also)

M5s can be a quite a bit more to run though. Mind you, you've had a Cerbera.

Ach, E39's aren't that bad. Oft a K here or there I think, but unlikely a 5K rodgering.

I'll be wary to ensure tyres/brakes are OK, that's often the source of a 1K shafting. Then it's a case of recent clutch, belts, and general 'stuff' being done. Assume 1K for an insp II, that's fine, and from what I can see that's the big stuff covered. I guess some of the older M5's may suffer from coolant systems (rads etc..) problems like some of the other e395's, but put it this way. At 6K you'll not be paying a lot in depreciation on a M5. A couple K / year is budgeted in there. Only if it stung me 4K/yr would it really annoy smile

They're not even as bad as that.

A clutch and flywheel may see you with a £1k shafting, but if you shop around a full set of quality tyres can be had for comfortably under £1k, as can a full set of discs and pads.

An inspection 2 is nothing like £1,000, will be about half that at the dealer, less again at an indy.

My insurance was under £500 last year through A-Plan. 43 years old, full no claims, no accidents or convictions.

I got an email from Chandlers in Worthing offering E39 Insp II from £319.00 but Im guessing that was a boggo model.

Im 35, paying £900 for my insurance with business and my wife added, 10K Miles.

Great cars but buy a bad one and you will pay for it.

I doubt it would be much more than that.

The last time I had it done, which to be fair is a couple of years ago now, it was £430.

E39 M5 doesn't need the valve clearances checked, which is a time consuming job, and what makes the inspection services so expensive on the E46 M3.

I'm 40yrs old ,full no claims, clean licience & paid £380 fully comp last July with LV, normal policy not limited mileage or anything.

Set of 4 tyres 18 months ago cost £680 from Formula 1 autocentres, Goodyear Aysmmetrics.

There's a post on M5 board with a link to a place that sells the original LUK clutch & dual mass flywheel approx £500 inc vat for the pair. Cotswald BMW sell genuine E39 M5 front brake discs on E-bay £369 inc free delivery. You need to do your home work or else you get shafted when buying parts. Went into BMW last week for the oil filter housing rubber mounts (common prob they break) they wanted £18 each ! Found a post on M5board & got the same thing from a place that sells tractor parts, cost £1.43 each ! Lots of knowledge over on M5board.
