Hi all,

Its MOT time in a couple of weeks and the rear tyres are a bit on the low side so i'm looking to purchase some new ones. At the minute its running Pirelli P6 Four Seasons which i found brand new including the staggered larger rear for £300 all in. However these seem to be a bit hard to get hold of in the 275 x 35 x 18 and as the fronts are still quite fresh and would like to keep the same tyre all round... I was wondering where i could get hold of just two of the rears? What would people recommend as a mid range tyre if i maybe have to replace all four. Any good web links would be helpful.

Thanks in advance
Andy

I've just ordered 2 of these and expecting delivery any day, the PS2's are really really hard to find in the uk, and probably the most recommended tyres for the car.

Payment is a bit of a pain, money bookers or bank transfer. But they are good prices.

If you wait for a couple if days I should be able to confirm they arrived.

Personally, I'd look to put the best tyres you can get on the rear (presuming you can't find the Pirellis you're after) rather that replacing all four on a budget. I'd be surprised if this caused you any issues unless you're doing some *serious* driving...

If it were me, I'd give that a go and if I found I wasn't comfortable with it, replace the fronts once I'd saved up enough pennies.

I've got Michelin Pilot Sport 2s on mine - great tyre especially in fair weather.

My tyres arrived this morning from oponeo, I would fully recommend these.

I've got the same tyres on the rear of my E39 and can't wait for them to wear out and replace with a proper summer tyre, as they are pretty compromised in terms of performance. Although pretty good fun for some oppo action when you are in the mood. They're not great as winter tyres either.

I've got ContiSport Contacts (had them on my 530 before the M5 too) and I think they're great.

I'm sure it doesn't need saying, but don't compromise on tyres, get the best you can. I've got a set of Style 66 alloys with Nokian Winter tyres (also from my 530) which will fit the M5 too.

All i can say is that Pirelli's that i have fitted at the moment are rubbish, any hint of slight acceleration from a roundabout will put the DSC light on. But having said that at £300 for the lot, i wasn't going to argue because at the time i was doing heavy motorway miles like, 240 miles a day so i was going through tires and fuel pretty quickly! I am a bit anal about having matching sets of rubber and as the fronts have at least 7mm left i'd kind of like to replace the rears or sell the fronts seperate and get an all round package. It had a set of Michelin PS2 on it when i bought it and they were far superior to what its running now. As i don't really do much spirited driving or track days i dont really want to go mad with spending close to £300 a corner for the Michelins as good as they are no tire in my opinion is worth that kind of money. I just want a compromise really.

I believe the original P6 has been replaced by the Cinturato P6 - neither are what you would call 'performance' tyres, although the newer one is much better - but the new P6 doesn't list your size yet.

I'm surprised you got a whole set for £300 though, as the last price I saw for those rears was about £175 EACH.

A performance tyre for the M5 would be the outgoing PS2, or the incoming PSS - but they're both likely to set you back £250-£300 per tyre.

I bought a full set of Conti Sport Contact 3's for my E39 M5 last year. Cost me £680 all in from Southam Tyres, who I believe are part of Micheldever. Not sure how much more expensive tyres have got in the last 12 months, but I thought that was reasonable. The tyre was faultless and just as good in the dry as a PS2. In the wet, the Conti was excellent and better than the PS2.
