V8 Vantage to 1 Series M Coupe
Discussion
Don't suppose anyone has done this or even driven them back to back? I've had my 2006 V8 9months, and i'm utterly bored of driving it - it just feels totally uninvolving and uninspiring, albeit it is very pretty to look at and gets a lot of attention.
I realise i've opened myself to criticism, but i get the impression (from reviews only), that the 1 Series M will be a "proper" useable mini-supercar that'll be a huge amout of fun on normal roads - and it'll have that something special about it that i felt the E90 M3 misses.
Assuming nobody higlights something truly flawed behind that idea, i'll put my deposit on said 1MC tomorrow (i'm assured dealer can get one of the last).
Just want to hear people's thoughts on the idea. Am i utterly mad?
Crash.

I saw one at the stand at the FOS. The interior is very 1 series.. what would one expect? and the seat leather is not the usual M Nappa, so if you had come to expect the usual M refinements, this is going to be lacking. But for 1 series owners, I can safely say , business as usual.
it is going to be shocking coming from a V8V.. and no, I don't think you can order cloth seats....

I've owned both. The 1M is SUBSTANTIALLY quicker on road than the 4.3V8V even if paper figs suggest there's little in it. I include corners in this by the way. In terms of real world overtaking ability the Vantage wouldn't see which way the 1M went. More importantly the 1M is massive FUN whereas the V8V is a bit 'so what' to drive - and in some areas (secondary damping) downright poor (IMHO) - even if it does look drop dead gorgeous. I changed from a 997S to a V8V and as soon as the initial love affair with it's newness and gorgeousness wore off the loss of 'soul' or involvement became apparent. Later 4.7 cars are MUCH better though.
A few seem to be knocking the 1M's interior. Of course it's not a £100k Aston but it's very 'right' with some nice touches. Bit like a GT3 compared with a Turbo. I'd go for it. Doubt you'll loose much money if it turns out not to be for you.

I noticed you didn't reply in the AM forum... A few seem to be knocking the 1M's interior. Of course it's not a £100k Aston but it's very 'right' with some nice touches. Bit like a GT3 compared with a Turbo. I'd go for it. Doubt you'll loose much money if it turns out not to be for you.

Cheers... still deliberating to be honest... I'm fairly sure the AM is going tho- as you say, "the love affair has worn off", it's just a case of what to replace it with - and i do really like the 1MC.

so what if the 1M is faster..... ? The mitsu EVO 10 and Subaru STis are faster... Has BMW lost something in the translation to the turbo engine (fab chassis aside)? is the look of the 1M appealing...? if you answer those questions positively then perhaps the 1M is for you. For me, I don't mind the turbo engine (nice to have torque) but I worry that in a few years time, I'll be wondering.... "oh dear..."

Don't think I just said it's faster and left it at that did I.
Your completely insane is what you are. Buy a last of the line Z4M R or C and spend the large amount of change on a S/C kit, brake upgrade & petrol. Total about 30-32k for 550 reliable bhp.
I'm sure the 1M is faster down a country lane than most things but who really cares, its how daft the driver is in the real world. I've had turbo cars and they always feel faster accelerating than they actual are. Which is not a bad thing. The handling is more assured, but less fun on the 1M. But look at the thing I'm sorry orange stitching and a rump like a Beagle. Don't do it.

I agree with your synopsis re: V8V , I suffered mine for 9 months before unloading it, overrated is an understatement, I cannot comment on the BMW because not had the pleasure of a drive, my thinking would be to get a prolonged road test before making any decision.I realise i've opened myself to criticism, but i get the impression (from reviews only), that the 1 Series M will be a "proper" useable mini-supercar that'll be a huge amout of fun on normal roads - and it'll have that something special about it that i felt the E90 M3 misses.

Theres nothing wrong with 'downgrading',not that i particularly feel thats what you are doing but some would say going from an Aston to a BMW is madness, but its not.If your not enjoying driving it then something is not right about it for you.
I often considered an AMV8 mainly because of its looks which are terrific but always felt that it wouldnt have the drive that my GT3 or CSL had so i never took the plunge.
Sometimes you have to 'stop and reset'.I did,a few years ago,i exchanged my GT3 for a Mini Cooper S and a big fat cheque,i was a man reborn, what a breath of fresh air,it was like driving for the first time all over again.
A few cars later and i have now ordered a 1M Coupe. I was so glad that after my GT3 i didnt just keep increasing the price and bhp because where do you stop?
Doing what i did increased my enthusiasm for driving and perhaps swapping your Aston for something 'lesser' would do the same for you.
Theres not a lot else in that price bracket and new that you would enjoy as much

The 1M is great. I own a GT3 next to it. GT3 are one best cars for track a man can buy. But how good it is on track how bad it is to use daily. People stare at you, point a finger etc. In the one M coupe i have black one only guys which know cars, know it s something special otherwise most people don t even look youre way. I like it that way very much. Last thing i want is a cop magnet. I enjoy my 1M very very much. The GT3 hangs more and more in my garage. Maybe it s better to sell it. With a few tweaks i can go hooligan on track with my 1M also.

Couldnt have put it better. Well said!Have you considered an M3? I think it's an utterly amazing car with a fantastic engine. Much more of an engineering feat that the 1M.
If you pick the right options it's also a little bit more 'bespoke' than the 1M, and you can do some great deals (at least here in The Netherlands) now the current model will be replaced in the next 24 months.

I also had a look in the 1m at FOS and i was very dissappointed. It to me looked like a *30 range rather than M. It didnt look special in anyway. and the dials, grey plastic :S
I take it they are better than the 46 M and the 90 M 3 on the roads?
You didn't think it looked just ever so slightly wider than a 130? Or the front looked a tiny bit different? ;-)I take it they are better than the 46 M and the 90 M 3 on the roads?
