Having placed an order for my 1M and not due to take delivery until Sept/Oct i think i may be a little upset if between now and then BMW decide to produce a CSL version, probably in the same way as when my 135i was overtaken by the 1M range topper. I was under the understanding before i placed my order that the the 1M was to be the limited production swansong for this generation of 1 series...hence heightening the desire to own one as it would be somewhat of a rarity as my old E46 CSL was. But to spend 40+k only to find out that it may not infact sit at the top smacks a little. Im sure a CSL version would be an awesome little creation but what about those poor 450 souls who purchased a 1M under the pretence that it was the "most special" version? Hmmmmm...mixed feelings on this one. As a car lover a 1m CSL would be fantastic, but as a future 1M owner,i would feel slightly short changed if indeed a CSL version came to fruition.

Any other thoughts out there?

I agree with what your saying but somehow don't think the 1M CSL will materialise.
I have read a few reports and various interviews on the web and the conclusion that I have drawn is that BMW's M Division would love to to make this car. However BMW at present won't give them their approval.

With the imminent arrival on the new 1 series I highly doubt that a CSL version will happen any time soon. It would be awesome if they went ahead and produced one and i'd definitely put my name down for one.

I too am awaiting my 1M and should take delivery of it sometime in August, I can't wait for mine.

I don't have any specific info from BMW, but I think there are two possible outcomes:
A) no 1M CSL edition is produced
B) they produce a v limited run of CSL editions, under the same concept as the M3 GTS (ie. Ultra low production numbers and exceptionally high (c.£65-70k+ price tag)

In case of (B) I suspect the price point may end up appealing more to collectors and less to people who intend to really drive them regularly. Interested in others' views.

I do wonder about the special accessories that were supposed to be released for the 1M.
Am also curious to see what the akrapovic exhaust will be like.

Buy another M3 CSL?

Of course it will be older, have higher mileage on, etc. but you probably know it well and can pick one up a bit cheaper than a new car.

I'd be a little disappointed but that's all.

I'm not in the market for a CSL as my 1M is a DD.

But I suppose it would make my 1 of 450 that little bit less special.

This weeks Auto Express,July 2011 issue 1173,is very M Power orientated, lovely article on RS3 vs 1M vs E30 M3,however page 10 has the new M division boss Dr Frierich Nitschke hinting at the divisions keeness to create a CSL version of the 1M,as i have said earlier great if you love cars, not so great if you believed that you had 1 of 450 of the best and last incarnations of the 1 series,i guess we will have to wait and see if they will build it.

I also would be interested in the performance parts for the 1M,having watched(too)many videos of the car in action the only thing i find slightly dissapointing is the sound, you can bet your bottom dollar/pound that a CSL version would sound a tad louder and more aggressive,i wonder if they would use the Akrapovic system for this model as in the Moto GP pace car?

Another E46 CSL did cross my mind and despite having a terrible fondness for these automotive delights i wanted to have a new car and the 1M ticked all the right boxes (which included exclusivity at the time bar CSL variants, bah ! ),and i found it difficult to warrant spending 30 to 35 k on a pristine example which carries an 8 year age tag only to be used as a daily driver,if it sat in my garage for sundays/trackdays and was a second car then absolutely yes!

Im going to phone my local dealer on Monday to see if they have any info re 1M CSL.

+1

I may ponder some changes in a year or so but I imagine a CSL version could be very costly given the price of the sports seats etc.

I not worrying. As mentioned, if (and its a big if) they produce one based on the current 1M, it will have a completely different price point, use and market.

Also worth noting, its a bit like 911 GT3's, doesn't matter so much which flavour (RS, non RS, 996, 997.1, 997.2, etc, etc), it's still a GT3.

IMHO, of course.

I would not worry if I were you. BMW don't seem to make what we really want anymore

Look at the GTS price. If bmw makes a 1M CSL which cost double the price of a regular 1M. I am not in the market.

Look at the parts used on the GTS. Not worth to pay double the price of an M3 for it. Its Crazy!!! If you buy the car to put in a museum as collector ok. But drive the ste out of them i rather buy me a normal 1M or M3 and build my own trackcar. So for driver enthusiasts a 1M CSL is only nice if the price is right. For a Collectors point of view the price is not that important those guys have no idea what the price of the parts used are they just pay.

Firstly the GTS was only produced so BmW could race he 4.4litre engine in it. Otherwise it would never have seen the light kf day, especially with all those halfords parts on it. BMW will not be proud of this car in the future as it is no more than a homologation exercise.

As for the 1M CSL, I hope its not made as the CSL badge doesn't deserve tl go on such a damn pig ugly car. If it does however it won't have a cage and it will have rear seats as that's bMW. You MIGHT see a Clubsport option with cage but I'm not sure why you would want it, as the car is surely no 2 seater sports car, it is a 4 seater coupe (just)

I don't think it is likely, however see the scenario above being most likely if they were to be considering one.

I can't imagine that the GTS M3 has damaged the M3 prices or sales at all. They are cars competing in wildly different price brackets, and target markets.

If they do that (B) I think a few folks might go for it at £65k - rather than buying a spec'd up M3. More 'special' more collectable, faster and much much rarer.

Agreed. That's sort of what I was getting at - it would price itself into a real niche of buyers. Only concern would be that it potentially becomes more of a collectible than a car that you can (or want to?) put miles on...

Especially if the "special" car could be fitted with the M3 V8 cloud9
