Almost certainly a snapped rear spring. The thinner tappered end of the spring breaks off and then rattles about everytime you go over a bump. When mine went i thought it was something rattling around on the boot floor.
£180ish for a pair from bmw, pretty easy to fit.
Have a look to see if the car looks slightly lopsided or jack it up and have a feel around for a bit of broken spring.

same price as my 330 that had both crack! s
t springs arent they.1 more vote for rear springs here!
No point checking the height visually, the part that snaps off is barely noticeable and with the height of them already, the ~5mm difference will be indistinguishable - mine broke about 3 months ago and showed exactly the same problems as yours, low speed rattle, 'chinking' when going over potholes is another one to listen for too (unless the broken part actually came out).

well i took it out again the same night and found a quiet road and weaved left to right slowly and hard and the noise has gone.... SO i guess the spring could still have snapped, but the noise has gone. it seems to handles fine, ride height looks fine (unlike my 330) and pulls in a straight line ok.No point checking the height visually, the part that snaps off is barely noticeable and with the height of them already, the ~5mm difference will be indistinguishable - mine broke about 3 months ago and showed exactly the same problems as yours, low speed rattle, 'chinking' when going over potholes is another one to listen for too (unless the broken part actually came out).
I still bet its a rear spring and the broken piece has just fell out. When mine broke,i removed the broken piece and drove the car for about eight months until the mot was due when i decided to replace them.I couldnt feel any difference with the car and you can only really tell a difference in ride height if you put the car on a perfectly level surface ie.garage ramps.
The only way to to tell for sure is to jack the car up,take the wheel off and have a look at the spring,or wait till next mot where it will be picked up.

lol, no its still doing it....
Spoke to my indy who checked it over recently as its still in warranty, which so far is worth jack, no names mentioned yet! He said it could be spring or pad/dics related...
So, pretty pissed off with it actually.
Story:
So day 1-2 after buying it i notice a few issues:
Diff noise
Fan squeak in dash
Squeal when cold
Windscreen washers blocked.
So, manage to get it in for work under warranty (3 months) and they fix the dif issue by replacing the oil (apparently a kit) and also removed and cleaned the lug in the washer resovior. The garage also said the belt was removed and checked and tightened.
Get home the same day to find a cigarette lighter in the drivers seat (nice - shame not a tenner) and a 12" screwdriver under the bonnet on top of the engine!
Since then i've found more issues:
fan squeak in dash (obviously not sorted 1st time)
squeak when cold (found to be tensioner and poly v belt after check by indy)
windscreen washers blocked (again)
right rear rattle (as per thread)
both top shock mounts have bonding/separation
I called the garage to notify him of the rear noise and windscreen washer issue again for them to say that the windscreen issue now might not be covered as its wear and tear... Whats your views? Where do i stand? What should be fixed? Should the car salesman offer me option to get it fixed elsewhere for free? Should i speak to bank?
Its back in tomorrow to get sorted under the warranty, and hopefully the take some car this time round, else naming and shaming...

Sorry to hear you are having problems
What is the age and mileage?
I would write all the concerns, sequence of events and notes on attempts to fix etc down in a letter. Tell them of your disappointment and set them a deadline for getting all issues resolved.
Tell them in the letter that you will be taking legal advice with a view to progressing this in a more formal manner
You have to document everything
