Finally........The 2004 Black e46 M3 convertible is in sight. Deposit paid, collection in 7 days. can't afford a custom exhaust just yet but from my past experience sticking a K&N filter on a 2002 Honda civic and the change in noise that it made, I think adding an induction kit will suffice for now.

Which is the best, most beefy, sporty sounding air filter on the market for an M3. Would really appreciate some experienced input from M3 lovers alike.ears

Cheers,

Don't do it. You'll lose power. The S54 is sensitive to intake and BMW got it bang on breathing wise (on the intake side at least).

There is no cheap option I'm afraid. The CSL airbox improves sound and breathing but will cost 000's. Gruppe M or perhaps Simota may have a slightly cheaper option?

I know of full race M3s that still run the standard airbox though.

Hi Thundercat,

As above, I suggest you have a good read around of the forums before you spend money unnecessarily. The M cars are different from other cars and there's plenty of discussion about how the car sounds and which products to potentially use. Save the money you were thinking of spending and put it towards a quality exhaust would be the best thing to do at this stage.

Cheers, Dennis!

I've been running a K&N 57i on my current E46 M3 and ran them on the 4 I've owned (M3's just work for me) and never had an issue, with tens of thousands of miles experience on a load of M3's I've never had an issue, great noise and as for loss in power, not a drop, had my car dyno'd and with the map & induction was pulling very healthy BHP & torc, get yourself one

Hi guys, appreciate the advice. I am going on my past experience with my old Civic and the incredible noise change. As far as exhausts go, I like the Gruppe sound. Any one disagree?

Thanks guys, at this point I will hold out on the air filter.

Cheers,

Well to be honest I am not racing the car, it's a cabrio for a start. i just like the beefy noise that an airfilter makes and wanted to know if there was a significant difference from standard to something like K&N.

There's a massive difference in noise between OEM and K&N, my current E46 M3 is also a cab, helps just that little bit more with the sound effects

Induction kits are a bit of a minefield on the E46 and I've experienced the K&N myself. All it did was make the idle rough, and driving from cold was even worse than normal. No power gain whatsoever, and in terms of noise not an awful lot better IMO.

Exhaust wise, the Gruppe M is loud, and I really do mean loud. If thats your thing then it will certainly fit the bill, but I couldn't live with it on a daily basis.

Thanks for all your opinions. Now, I have been watching a few youtube vids and come to the conclusion that I like the sound of e46 with straight pipes. Knowing that anything good in life comes at a cost.

1)are they expensive? (which ones to buy)
2) Is it bad for the car to have straight pipes.

These things are as much use as an ashtray on a motor bike, leave the induction oem, M division got it right first time, with the only real upgrade being to Csl as previously mentioned

Cable tie a lolly stick to the suspension coil and let it rattle against the front rim if you just want extra noise. hehe

If you want better "noise" save up for a CSL....if you can't afford one just drive everywhere at 7000rpm.
