my new E39 M5. does anyone here know it?
Discussion
my thoughts so far. loving the manual box-my other car is a flappy paddle one. lovely place to sit and the performance feels literally effortless. cant help but think if i was involved in designing this i'd have made it lighter...the doors must weigh a ton! were'nt audi doing aluminium bodies back in 1999?
reg document calls it scarab grey. but yes, she looks green. it's my first car with a proper traction control function, have to rely on the right foot on the 355. does any one/would it be wise to turn dsc off on public roads and then gradually acclimatise to the performance are am i mad? i'd consider myself a fair pilot but with no track experience and i'm looking at a day at bedford to get to grips with the performance envelope.
btw. the car comes with a fully stamped up dealer service record. is it possible to get details from bmw re any extra work-clutch etc that may have been done to the car?

The DSC in these cars is especially intrusive. I switch it off as a matter of course. You'd have to do something really silly to get in to trouble. The M5 is a softy unless you deliberately unsettle it and even then it's as playful as a 6 month old Labrador.btw. the car comes with a fully stamped up dealer service record. is it possible to get details from bmw re any extra work-clutch etc that may have been done to the car?
As regards the SH; you can phone BMW Customer Services (I think it's a premium number) and they'll give you the low-down on its history.

The m5 is fantastic at the limit very controllable & stable it can easily make you look like a drift god btw. the car comes with a fully stamped up dealer service record. is it possible to get details from bmw re any extra work-clutch etc that may have been done to the car?
when driving hard having the dsc off will allow you to exploit the cars full performance. I would leave it on in everyday driving though as if your half asleep & give it a bit to much it can bite you especially in the wet
Biggest problem with the e39 m5 is how the hell do you better it????? very few cars will ever match its all round ability.
Fantastic cars, had two in five years and still miss them, despite having an E60 following them! Definitely leave DSC on in the wet as can catch you out if you are not fully focussed on the car at all times. Surprisingly good fuel consumption on the motorway if you aren't pressing on too much. Enjoy!
Hi
This was my M5 until the end of March.
I bought it when it was 3 years old with c 26k on the clock and it is / was the best car I have ever owned. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
I always looked after it and, as you see, maintained the dealer servicing and it was completely reliable.
The colour is pretty unique being sort of pearlescent green / grey / purple.
If you want to know any more about it, PM me.
All the best.

thanks paul. i've dropped you an email. publicly however, i would like to commend you on your stewardship of this beast. she is an absolute credit to you. to put 70k miles on it and keep it looking and feeling like it does..well, i just have to doff the cap.
the car has really posed a nice dilema for me..which one to take on my forthcoming euro jaunt?
picked up the other half at heathrow last week. she had seen it on the web and i failed to inform her about the car's special talents. she couldnt understand why i'd gone for a "boring bmw". i explained that i just felt the need for a relaxing old barge for gentle cruising. she still had a puzzled look as i crawled out of terminal four. she "got" it by the time we returned home the scenic way.
