Hi M fans,

I have been offered for sale the above car. It is on a 02 plate, carbon black (blue?) with SMG2 and upgrades, sat nav and dvd and all the other goodies, I think it is well specced. Average mileage.

The seller informs me that it is a cat d repair, having some damage on the rear quarter. from what I could see, it was repaired well.

He wants £7k for it and I was wondering if it was worth buying at that price, or to walk away and look elsewhere?

Cheers, FE

Even if it has been repaired to a good standard you might well have trouble selling it on. Might be worth it if it is a keeper. How many miles is it and is the history good?

The mileage is just under 80k with FSH.

I usually buy things as keepers, until the next thing that catches my eye!

Not long had a eE36 318is Coupe and am now utterly converted to BM's

To be fair it wont take much to right off an M3 bmw charge frankly ridiculous prices for parts like bumpers, once paint fitting & loan car charges are added it very quickly rights the car off.

Get it checked out properly if its all good then go for it yes the car will be worth less when it comes to selling on but you get the saving in the first place smile

Not worth £7K when average mileage high spec '02 cars are being advertised in the classifieds for £8.5K, all IMO of course.

yes

I've no problem with buying honest Cat D or even C cars, and my Scenic daily diesel hack is a Cat C at the moment.

I'd want the M3 you are looking at for between £6000 and £6500 though to make it worth my while ..... It's have to be a first class condition and history car to get £7k with a Cat D on the log book IMO

With petrol and insurance prices soaring the classifieds are jam packed with M3's at the moment, most of which aren't cat d.

If that continues, you will need a seriously good reason to tempt buyers into buying yours when you sell it. The only way you'll do it is by pricing it properly, so you need to make 100% sure you get the very best deal when you buy it. £7k sounds too high, I'd be looking £6k max if everything else checks out.

One thing is for sure, if you pay top dollar for it now you'll get raped later on.

That said, if its a keeper then forget prices and go on the quality of the repair, history and general condition/maintenance.

Also, check with your insurer before committing to make sure they will cover it. There have been stories in the past (albeit rare) where insurers have refused cover on recorded cars.
