Have joined the fold - picked up a space grey E61 M5 today. Night and day from my 535d - the car finally has the chassis that it deserves and an engine that begs to be revved. Had to divert to the A573 on the way home - what a hoot. Need a slightly more sonorous exhaust though! Managed 16.9 mpg - gave a cheer when I saw the average rise to 17.0 but made that go away without much trouble.
Must be ghay or something... Managed 21mpg in mine on the way down to Portsmouth from the Big Smoke last night. Cruise set at 70mph though
Saw 7.9mpg when I picked her from the dealer if that helps to absolve me from ghayness...
So tempted to keep the Z4MC. Match made in heaven. Let's see whether the heart will overrule brain and wallet....

Welcome to the 61 club. Only around 190 of these left in the UK (and shrinking due to bad drivers) so be proud of your purchase. 16.9mpg is good, just wait til you go sub-10.
What spec and mileage, where did you buy?
Eddie
I have a voodoo doll with your name on it mate - your posts here made no small contribution in corrupting me. What spec and mileage, where did you buy?
Eddie

Spec is space grey, black leather, multi function seats, standard wheels, comfort access (not sure if that's standard?), sun protection glass, soft close doors and Logic 7, 31K miles, bought from a BMW dealer oop north. Need to get the auto cargo cover closing sorted; it's a bit temperamental. And the front brake discs look a bit thin/ridged - will put a micrometer on them and call the dealer out if they're too thin. Funny how they'll only put pads on if it's at their expense but insist on pads and discs if it's at your expense.
Looked at a few locally - Interlagos blue in Salisbury (57 reg w/50K miles but sold before I sold my 535d), an Interlagos blue at an indie (08 reg with 21K miles but looking a bit too unloved for a car so young) and a lovely 08 in a private sale (21K miles w/massive spec including ventilated seats and alcantara headlining, ex BMW demo car) but the buyer decided not to sell.
All car values are fooked these days.....M-cars are actually not bad compared to some!!
Anyway, I have a very simple view: I value my cars according to what they do for me......it's about how they make me feel every time I drive them.
Learn to drive these M5s......a hugely rewarding business.....and you'll begin to appreciate how awesome they are......mean, moody, magnificent.
There endeth the sermon.
Go in peace my children, for I will be with you always!!
[Out last night....still pissed!!]

Are the e61's likely to hold their value well, given their scarcity and relative exclusivity....?
E60 M5's seems destined to go into the bargain basement category very soon.....
Woohooooo! This sensitive subject again. E60 M5's seems destined to go into the bargain basement category very soon.....
At first i thought they'd be strong against the E60, but quickly saw a dip in the market and the two models were very similarly priced. But, then the market changed again about 3 or 4 months ago and it seems that the E61 is holding better than the E60 for comparable age, condition and mileage cars. Its a difficult thing to guage at any one point in time as there are varying standards of car for sale. ie. when the average car for sale is a bit of a dog or is needing some work the prices generally seem a bit low. The 'wrong crowd' tend to buy these cars very quickly and then when that pool dries up you are left with the better cars at a higher value, giving a pumped up price average and more impressive residuals. You get a bit of a caterpillar effect on the value averages so you cannot give a definitive answer to your question from one month to the next.
I think what you can say though is that the E61 will always be a couple of grand up on the E60 just based on what it is and the numbers available. The arrival of the F10 M5 saloon will be the big story teller though so best wait til then to see what happens. The good thing for the E61 owners is that BMW are NOT going to build a new M5 Tourer so you never know, we might fare better than say the RS6 / 4 boys who get hammered every couple of years with the arrival of a new Avant (been there).
Either way, just enjoy the car. Ive tried rationalising this argument before and met nothing but grief from the forum, who are normally folks looking to buy (hoping for falling values) or suffering depreciation elsewhere in the //M world rather than actual M5 owners. I do agree though that the E60 is falling badly, especially the poorly maintained or 'wrong owner' cars. Sure there are the realists / cash heavy owners who dont care one way or the other and let their cars go at the lower end of the spectrum without so much as a raised heartbeat but thats their bag. For the rest of us who look after their cars as much as they drive them (some see this as a crime) resale value is a topic worth getting interested in.
Nuff'said!

They fitted the new pads to give the pedal some feel so you didnt notice. Cheap trick! Who's the dealer?
Get them to change both the pads and the discs at the very least. Only doing the pads is downright wrong and is very unprofessional, bordering on unsafe. The next thing you would have experienced given a few hundred miles is brake wobble / vibration on braking at speed. Not very safe to say the least. If you have problems with the dealer phone BMWUK and pass the issue on.
Makes me sick this does. After xmas I went to a dealer to get them to fit my discs and pads and the first thing they spouted was 'we cannot fit them unless you get the new pads from us'!! Something about how the packaging for the pads was not BMW's own despite the pads being identical. Always on the rob from the customer or saving their own cash. Took my discs and pads elsewhere and saved a good hundred pounds on the labour.

Not going to name and shame - will give them a chance to make good. The brakes do pulsate slightly when warmed up - that plus their tired appearance made me put a micrometer on them.
The cargo cover doesn't get pulled down after the tailgate or glass is shut. With some fiddling it works once or twice and then ceases to even twitch. It was a challenge to get the salesmen to admit that such a thing even existed.
