http://www.evo.co.uk/buying/buyingguide/242575/bmw...

I came across this Z4M buyer's guide from evo, which suggests that the throttle system on S54 engine cars can go 'out of tune'. I carried out the simple reset procedure on my E46 M3 and amazingly it worked - throttle response is much improved and the car feels a lot more urgent.

I had no idea that the throttle system was adaptive so this might be of interest to other geeky M car owners. It's been done to death on other forums but I haven't seen any reference to it on here yet.

I'd take anything EVO/AutoExpress say with a pinch of salt, as they've not amended their article almost 2 years after their errors were pointed out to them - namely there is no electric steering on the ///M version, nor does any ///M use runflats, nor does it have 296lb/ft.

Yes definitely taken with a pinch of salt, but the reset works

Don't know if doing it that way works but I had the adaptations reset by a mate with a PC full of diag software and that most defintely made a difference.

Throttle response was a lot more immediate throughout the whole arc of travel. Makes the car feel sharper.

Kind of like pressing the sport button but not quite as harsh.

And the first time I started it after clearing the adaptations it cut out at idle, wasn't expecting that and had a bit of a moment deeply regretting pissing about with the car's brain. Until I was told they all do that as they need to learn how to tickover again.

Thanks very much, I'll give it a go, the throttle just seems a touch lethargic to me.

Never knew that.

Thanks for posting - have been using sport mode recently as seems "smoother" but will give the reset a go.
