Hi guys,

I've recently started reading PH again and wanted to get a bit more involved in the M-Power group.

I used to have a 400bhp R32 GTR Skyline (my dream car as a teenager) but then sold and went for something cheap and cheerful for a couple of years, a Pug 306 Rallye.

The Rallye has been an absolute hoot to own and in 2010 survived a long trip to Le Mans among a group of TVRs and Porsches. In fact it kept up with an older Chimaera so I was pretty chuffed with it.

However, finances are far better now than they were when I had the Skyline so I'm now on the hunt for something with a lot more power, and a lot more road presence. Let's face it, no-one who isn't a car enthusiast will recognise a 306 Rallye! I plan to go to Le Mans again in 2012 and want something comfortable and reliable - hence why another Skyline isn't an option and I'm looking at a German war machine.

I'm a single bloke so number of doors isn't an issue. I just want something that I can just jump in and drive and when the time is right I can get heavy with my right foot. Currently considering an M5 or an M6 - both the V10 engined version (sorry I don't know the "E" number)

I've seen them going between £20-24k with up to 50k on them so that's about the price range I'm looking at.

For those of you thinking "That's a massive upgrade from a Rallye" - yes it is. However the Skyline would do 0-60 in 4.5 and was surprisingly tail happy so I'm used to driving something that takes a bit of skill. Finances are also far better these days so I can swallow up to £400 a month for running and servicing if needs be. smile

Anyways, that's me, those are my plans, and I'd love to get some feedback from the group about the M5 vs. M6 and recommendations as well.

Cheers!

Try the search function mate, this is a topic beaten to death of late.

As a current E61 M5 (Tourer / estate to the uninnitiated) owner may I offer a couple of lines of my feelings:

BMW fully comp Warranty is a must. No ifs or buts!
George Best's drinking partner. Champagne quality please barman!
Healthy service and running costs.
Even healthier repair costs.

But asside from all the doom and gloom, its a bloody stupendous machine. I've driven all of the competition, owned a portion and you just cannot match it for performance, quality, reliability (coughs, remembering its clutch habits) and out and out lunacy.

In a nutshell, don't buy if you're on a budget but do buy if you're not. Spend the exrtra to get low miles and good spec and you won't go wrong.

Oh, and use the search function mother-hubbard!

So a Nissan skyline GTR is tail happy but you want a RWD M car instead??rofl
Surly a GTR nissan is 4wd and if you had another cheaper GTs version with a higher BHP you actually wasted your money,
Sorry I cant take this serously. What about a Mondeo 2.2 diesel?laugh

Similar in many ways, power especially. Not alot wrong with the M6 but I would go for the M5. Looks much better and cooler and if you are on a budget maybe slightly less running costs. But as said above, if you're on a budget then maybe it's not the car for you either way. IMHO obviously.

Have you thought about an E46 CSL ?

Requirements sound like they fit, as does budget.

You won't lose much either.......just a thought smile

You should consider an M3 CSL, they can be had in this price range and have a lot of road presence and sound fantastic. Not to say that the M5 isnt, but the running costs are on another level to your Skyline and even the CSL.

Could you explain where the M5 might be cheaper to run than the M6 please? Just curious.

Who's this joker?

Actually mate I can't take YOU seriously. You obviously know nothing about Skylines so let me give you a bit of education before you try to continue to mock me...

The R32, 33 and 34 GTRs have the ATTESSA 4WD system. The way it works is that it transfers torque to the front wheels in the event that the rears lose grip. So actually the car runs in RWD mode most of the time. When you accelerate hard it probably sticks 20% to the front wheels and of course if the back end loses it completely it'll give a 50/50 split.

The R33 and R34 GTRs ATTESSA system was electrically controlled so it was really quick to react. The R32s had a system based around oil pressure (or similar) which was slower to react. Hence why the R32 GTRs are way more tail happy than the newer models. Consider that mine had more power going to the rear wheels than an M3 CSL. I hope I'm making my point clear.

Yanto and Panthro - thanks for suggesting the M3 CSL. I actually hadn't considered it but I'll definitely take a look.

In terms of running costs the Skyline cost me £6000 in the first year without the replacement engine (yes, one of my turbos breathed a sigh of defeat as one of the turbines cracked and the blades got drawn into the cylinders). With the replacement engine it was £9500 in the first year. I'm fortunate enough that I now earn more than double that money per year in salary than I did before, so I reckon I can afford to run an M-power car smile

Again thanks for the suggestions everyone and I'll be on here a bit more frequently

If I was on that budget I think I`d be looking at CSLs also. Although you`re right you can get a V10 for that kinda money, whether you`d want to is another matter entirely.

If you could squeeze the budget I`d go M6, sounds better, more exclusive, better interior, faster (slightly) more incisive handling. This is based on the coupe not the vert. I have the vert and you do get 9/10ths of what the coupe gives you but you get to hear MORE of THAT engine.

'Whispers' - the M6 rag top is a fat knacker, even compared to my E61. So maybe not quicker. Lol. But I bet it sounds awesome with no roof!

OP
I doubt it will be any better, I see exactly where your coming from, but still M3s are 100% rear whhel drive.
Surly the GTR compensate when they start to loose grip, an M car does but there is no Yaw control to help you out like in a Skyline. I am still struggling to see why you think an M car will be better.

Totally understand that M3s are 100% RWD, and yes GTRs transfer power to the front wheels when rears lose grip, as I described above.

The reason I'm after an M-power car and not another Skyline is mainly due to reliability to be honest. So many Skylines have had engines modified badly that you just worry when it's going to go bang. You also have the constant niggles that go with a modified engine such as "are my AFMs playing up, or is it the new injectors?". "Has the re-map fixed the misfires or am I going to need new coil packs?", for example.

I see an M-power car as more of a get-in-and-drive machine which of course has high and regular maintenance costs, but overall would be easier to live with than a GTR.

Fair one, sometimes even 45kg if I'm hungry. It is amazing though how an M6 can weigh more than the M5 Lardy Barge.
