Should i have my m3 mapped?
Discussion
Had codes read and wiped and a brake fault diagnosed by local specialist earlier and while chatting they offer a remap to take my e36 evo up to 345 bhp and 350 nm. Cost: 350 quid. Apparently it gives better economy on normal driving too.
My question is this: am i going to notice that sort of power difference, is it a good price and has anyone else had this done to theirs?

Can't comment if it makes a difference but price compares to what a local specialist offered me to remap my old M5. They also offer a money back deal if you are not happy. Ask them if they will do the same.
yeah they did say drive it for a few days and they'd refund if not happy. i just wonder if i'll notice 20 odd bhp more on a 300+ car??Y282 said:

You'll certainly notice a genuine 345bhp ~ but you're likely to need far more than a remap to achieve it I'm afraid. The stock S50B32 engine is rated at 317bhp (321PS) and the very fittest standard EVOs do make that but 295~305 more common tbh. 345 is certainly achieveable if you have the budget but it will need a carbon airbox, Shrick cams, better exhaust and a custom remap. Apologies if I was being negative ~ EVOs are great and a good remap will certainly improve the throttle response and give a couple of extra horsepower.
There is a thread ( link below) running on bmowner forum which lists hundreds of stock and modified E36 M3 and M3 EVO dyno plots; you will understand my total sceptisim about achieving 345bhp from just a remap once you have read it. 108 bhp per liter from a S50B32 with just a remap is unheard of in my experience and I'd certainly like to see the before and after plots if you do get the work done, particularly the intake temperatures.

I am curious to know who your local specialist is ?

it's kartechnic in dorset. i know the evo figures out of the box have always been prone to inflation and boasting, but i would say mine's safely still well into the 300s, probably over 310. it's well maintained and feels healthy enough.

They were guaranteeing it provided the engine is healthy (which it is) with dyno results to prove. Question is not if it can be done but is it good vfm/noticable?
I too struggle to believe that claim. I've been on M3 forums for a lot of years now, and have a pretty good idea what is realistically achiveable with just a remap. (Had an e36 before my e46)Ask them if they'll still guarantee it if you have the before and after dyno runs done independantly somewhere else.
If they DID achieve 345 Bhp, then there is a slight chance you'd notice it. But you'd soon get used to it and it would feel the same as before. (And I say this as someone who HAS had their M3 remapped)
Personally I'd save your moeny for something else.

wonder what i can get out of the blade for another 300 quid instead?

yeah, this is more the question. if it is possible, is it a big enough jump for 350 quid? anyone who's driven an evo knows theyre not all that slow anyway.

Part of the reason for having my remap was that I attended a VMax event and wanted the speed limiter removed.wonder what i can get out of the blade for another 300 quid instead?

If it wasn't for that event, I would say the remap is the only modification I wouldn't bother doing if I was starting from scratch again. (Use the money for some Eibach anti-roll bars or something. You WILL notice the difference with that sort of mod)

Relatively small 'on paper' gains are noticeable on the road; page 6 of this thread http://pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&f... shows the flywheel power of my EVO before and after it was modified by Evolve. +20Hp is only 7% more power but the car feels so much 'fitter' on the road.
Sal & Imran's reputation for mapping the S50B32 is arguably the best around and they have refined their map further since I had mine done. This link gives you a realistic idea of the gains to be had. http://www.evolveautomotive.com/engine-ecu_930/tun...

An Evo cannot be mapped to 345bhp. However, that doesn't mean that they couldn't give you a graph to show it had. Avoid like the plague.

You might even get a 'before' plot which only shows 290bhp - "as that's what these really make, mate" - then you'll get a miraculous 330bhp 'after' plot which they'll claim is due to their remap giving you 40bhp.
In some instances they will even do a bit of remapping to make it 'feel' faster by making the power delivery rougher/more stepped, or by tweaking the throttle software to give you more throttle for the same pedal input.
You'll go away and the placebo effect will have you thinking you've got a bargain for £350, and then you get out-dragged at the lights by a chavved-up 318 and start realising you've been had.

Im not really the right bloke for them to do that to. I'll leave it i thinkIn some instances they will even do a bit of remapping to make it 'feel' faster by making the power delivery rougher/more stepped, or by tweaking the throttle software to give you more throttle for the same pedal input.

No DBW throttle software on an EVO by the way they have a good old fashioned cable; they don't even make 290 when the cable's not adjusted correctly.
