Cheers

Which M5? E39 or E60/61?

Also depends on your dealer.

See this thread for some figures for the e39;

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

No such thing as Inspection II for E60 M5, biggest service costs in my experience are spark plugs / oil change at around £375ish each, however brake pads and new discs will be far more costly.

Is that a quote for the E60 plug change? If so your a way off. £1500 is the average for the main service inc plug change on the E60/61.

Nope, I'm not off, that's what I was charged for them to be performed as individual service items.

Right? I have an invoice for £1400 for the plug change at around 30k miles. Every 3rd oil change is plugs i believe. An oil change itself is circa £250 to £300 by itself if i remember correctly.

Thanks, not as bad as I thought (though not exactly cheap).

£1500 for an E60 service? How much of that is parts??

I bought oil, filters and plugs online and got BMW to fit to keep warranty and stamps up. HUGE saving.

Right, I actually overestimated, here's what I've paid out in servicing over two years of ownership at Sytner / Stratstone;

Sparkplugs - £261 (£130 labour, £131 parts)+vat = £313.20
Microfilter - £66+vat = £79.20
Intake silencer - £88+vat = £105.60
Oil change - £218+vat = £261.60

In addition, I was also charged a general 'service' surcharge of around £20 each visit.
Just had two new rears (CS2's) fitted for £508 all in as well.

I feel bad for those who paid such a ridiculous figure for an inspection service on an E60 (or the equivalent of). I've had quotes of £1000 for an I2 on an E39 and its a total joke.

I do it myself, £80 for the oil (TWS), £10 or so for the filter, £20 for the air filters and the same (ish) for microfilters. Then £60 for plugs. Total of £190 for parts. On an E60 there's another 2 plugs and prices may vary slightly but the extra grand that BMW chuck on the top for 2 hours labour is the very reason why I continue to avoid them as I do pot holes.

Are you not concerned by the risk that you won't have a leg to stand on should your car break? What if your engine fails irreversably and you want to claim on your warranty? No service stamp, no compo! Also, do you have BMW reset your service lights for you? Do they charge and do they stamp your book?

I take it you are using the manufacturer recomended plugs? My last car had 8 plugs and they were around £18 per plug. Many performance cars, inc RS6, M5, AMGs need top spec plugs to run properly. You missed out the SMG service and diff service for the E60/61 which is included in the £1500.

It still seems like way too much money for a service.

Morning guys,

I'm looking at an M6 that will need a plug change as part of its next service, and I'm just trying to work out exactly what it will cost me. Is it really going to be £1,500-ish at a BMW dealer? CSLChappie and Ecain seem to have VERY different experiences on the costs of this.

The car has the extended warranty and I'd like to keep approved stamps in the books - although some suggest that if you use OEM BMW parts the warranty can remain intact regardless of who has fitted them. I can't see BMW being that relaxed about it but happy to be corrected!

Thanks

If anyone wants some E60 M5 microfilters (basically the same as every other E60 5 series), here is a good link; they are made by Comline and built to OEM specification

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-5-series-E60-E61-03-...

For cars not in warranty anymore, there are so many good suppliers out there that provide filters, plugs etc built to OE specification for a fraction of the price.

The alternative is to buy original BMW parts online (which can be found at a huge discount) and have the garage fit them for you charging only the labour. You still have the original parts and the all important stamp.

If the car is still within the three year new car warranty period, it can be serviced by any VAT registered garage, and as long as they follow the BMW schedule and use genuine parts the warranty will remain intact.

If the car has an extended warranty beyond the initial three year period, or a BMW Approved Used Car warranty, then it must be serviced by a BMW dealer or the warranty becomes void.

This^^ But you can have an indy service it under extended warranty so long as they are BMW Approved. They will advertise this.

As for the cost of a plug change, mine was £1387, done at circa 30k miles in early 2010 so prices will have gone up with VAT and time. Remember its not just the engine that gets serviced under this one, the SMG and diff all get serviced too.

Thanks Ecain - I've found a great car that is showing it needs the plugs changing in 8k miles, and the dealer I spoke to talked me through everything they'd do at the service, which had a similar total cost to what you're indicating (SMG service, diff oil change etc).

I've got a specialist who I've used before looking at it for me tomorrow and will decide whether I'm pushing the button once I get his feedback. Exciting stuff!
