Hi
The E36 M3 is one heck of a lot of car for the money.
But.....
There is no such thing as a cheap M3.
It is very easy to spend a lot of money on these cars putting a couple of things right, tyres and brakes all round really add up for example. There's both worth a look though, just do a little research into common parts costs so you have an idea of what you're looking at.
I bought my absolutely mint M3 individual last March. I've spent approx £1500 on it last year and £1000 this year, nothing major has gone wrong. Attending to an oil leak this week I've discovered a cracked manifold flexi, so not happy!
Get a good one though and you'll fall in love with it. I must have a thing for green too, here's mine:

That'll help if you can do your own work, I'm an ex-BMW Senior tech myself (10 Years man & boy!)
I too have always done my own work and get a good discount on parts which makes the generic E36 bits very reasonable. Be careful of M specific parts though as even with a discount they're bloody expensive! I'm not trying to put you off it's just a lot of people buy these cars and think they cost the same to run as a 328i, they don't.
Get yourself signed on to the M3Cutters forum and introduce yourself aswell, loads of great info and tips there on running these things.
Goodluck with your purchase ;-)
