Guys,

If I can't buy AUC are any of the non BMW warranties worth it? Such as warranty wise? Or would I really need to go for an AUC car with BMW warranty for absolute peace of mind?

You dont HAVE to buy AUC to take advantage of the BMW warranty. So long as the car has less than 60k miles, has a FULL, uninterupted BMWSH it'll qualify for the BMW extended warranty. Do not buy a car that is not eligable for the BMW warranty.

BMW Warranty routine: Dealer investigates your problem. Warranty repair approved (99% of the time). Dealership carries out work. Dealership get paid by BMW. You dont pay anything (unless you choose excess). Everyone is happy.

eg Warranty Direct routine: You phone warranty company who tell you to contact specialist or recommended repairer. Specialist / Dealer investigates problem. They then contact warranty company. Warranty company read the warranty book and look for every reason NOT to cover the claim. More often than not its not covered and you have to haggle to get a contribution. They contribute for example 30% of the cost but you have to pay it all up front. Dealer / repairer carries out the work and you pay them. You / repairer send the warranty company an invoice or receipt for the work done. Wait 2 or 3 weeks for your cheque to arrive, all the time you are suffering the loss of a good amount of money. To top that off the 3rd party warranty is nearly the same cost as BMW's own.

Its an easy decision. BMW like warranty work because its easy money for the dealers and it keeps customers.

Thank you. I know there isn't a "typical" cost of a AUC BMW warranty on an e60 m5 but could anybody give me an idea of what they are currently paying? Also, is anyone out there using a non BMW warranty, how are you finding it?

I would be surprised if you got a BMW warranty on an E60/1 for less than a grand.

I pay £90 a month (its important you select the monthly contract) for my BMW warranty. Warranty directs warranty is circa £780 a year but is nowhere near as good.

Eddie, I think you`re a little confused about the BMW warranty. In that, yes it`s offered by BMW on their AUC cars but it isn`t backed by BMW, it`s Mondial. It`s a specific policy for the M cars.

This is why BMW will push to get things through the warranty, which is of course great for us. Unfortunately it also means that certain dealers are prone to finding spurious faults.

Regardless of who's backing it, if BMW are pushing it to boost their income ref repairs I'm all for it.

At least. It's between £1k and £1.2k for a Z4M...

The BMW endorsed warranty is excellent and the relationship between Mondial and BMW means that (in my experience) most things get approved without hassle. I haven't tried the alternative, but it's common sense that it will always be in the interest of insurers without a relationship with BMW to get out of paying and particularly where the size of the bill is quite scary ...

Yup the BMW used warranty is very good, no messing around when I've had it in the past. I had a couple of minor issues that it didnt cover but BMW picked up the parts cost as goodwill so I ended up with a small labour charge.

I pay £77 a month i think for all the bells and whistles (comprehensive with insured Emergency Service etc).

Didn't even cross my mind not to renew it (prior owner paid annually in advance till Sept when i moved it to monthly DD). Just not worth the hassle

Excellent.

So say I buy my e60 M5 with 59k miles and previous full BMW service history. I then proceed to put the BMW warranty on the car and then do say 45k miles in my first year of motoring ( I won't, just hypothetically) as the car is now over 100k miles would I be able to renew the BMW warranty? What are the restrictions on the warranty?

Think that the benefit of monthly DD. It won't stop you keeping the monthly fee going even though you over 100k as it just ticks over till you cancel it. If you tried to buy an annual one it would not allow you as over the 100k mark

That is my understanding of it anyway

That's right. If you were to do a lot of miles, take out the monthly policy as you can then keep it running as long as you like past 100,000 miles.

Also, the annual one goes up in price every year, after 60k and after 100k as far as i can tell. The monthly one just flat-lines the whole time. Only VAT affects it.

Also correct! So if you have a warranty, make sure it's before 60,000 miles. It goes up roughly 50% when you go above that mileage.

I'm not sure on the M5, as I have a Z4M. The Z4M goes from roughly £850pa to £1200pa though.

When I quoted it went up a lot more than that - it was 2k or thereabouts. (Just bought a Z4MC.)

That's not how every 3rd party warranty company works... I use Warranty Wise & I can take my car to any garage I want, Warranty Wise have to come & check the car out for larger claims but they settle the payment and they cover wear & tear. I have a '06 Boxster & a gear linkage broke, the RAC towed the car to GT One in Chertsey & I had the car back in a few days. I pay £600 a year for my cover & don't have to take the car to Porsche for servicing (& do everything they say needs doing) to maintain cover like how I'd have to with the Porsche warranty. The cover is quite customisable, I set the maximum claim for 1 claim at £10k in case of engine failure & that affects the premium. I would not want to be tied into main dealer servicing on my Porsche & would far rather take it to a specialist where I think the service is better (apart from the 'free' coffee). You are also free to do mods where as the Porsche cover is stupidly restrictive, not sure what BMW are like for this. Don't tar all these companies with the same brush... although I'm sure there are a lot of ones out there with pointlessly low claims limits though & who may try & evade payment.
