Derestricting M cars
Discussion
I recently got back into M world again after 2 year enforced absence
. I never bothered about removing top speed restriction on my previous 3 cars but intend to spend a bit more time in Europe with M6 and have been thinking about it because I find it quite frustrating running out of top end in 5th with 2 gears left to go.....
I wondered if anyone could recommend where I could get this done, some idea of cost and whether it can cause warranty problems? I live in the north east but would have no problem travelling somewhere else.
Cheers

Hi, from what ive read there’s a package bmw offer, this involves the removal and sending of your DME computer to m munchen to be re-programmed, if I remember rightly this increases top speed to 190+ mph, not sure on cost, I think it was under 2 grand but you also received some kind of track day training as part of the package. There are very reputable tuners such as DMS who can easily remap and remove the limiter, a guy at work had his e92 m3 de-limited by them and says it is fantastic, but on the downside he has subsequently been told by the dealer his engine and drive train will not be covered by the warranty, (They didnt trace it he told them and I don’t know why he didn’t try and find this out prior), his argument is it doesn’t make sense to void the warranty if BMW are offering this as an option. I’m in the process of getting an M5 and this is 1 of the first things thing ill be looking to do, so ive been trying to find out if I do get it remapped and de-limited are these traceable but I just keep getting conflicting reports.

According to some scientific research in my bosses M6, the 155mph limiter doesnt kick in in 6th ...
It was still pulling at a speedo indicated 165 apparently, although that doesnt mean that if you get to an indicated 170+, it doesnt kick in at a 'true' gps'd 155bhp - from the satnav.
My E46 M3 was the same, go past 155 in 5th (SMG) then hit 6th and get round the limiter (this was done at Bruntingthorpe) and I was clocked at 167mph with the speedo reading past 175mph.It was still pulling at a speedo indicated 165 apparently, although that doesnt mean that if you get to an indicated 170+, it doesnt kick in at a 'true' gps'd 155bhp - from the satnav.

However, the limiter applies in all gears. Therefore, being able to bypass it in 5th or 6th (for SMG III cars) is a myth.
My prev E60 hit the limiter in 5th gear. Also M cars are limited to 310 kph unlike other cars which are limited to 300kph. This is equivalent to 163 mph compared to 155 mph for others. But is derestricting them obvious routinely to BMW and will it invalidate your warranty? (and if so, why?)

One wonders whether your kmh/mph conversion tool is a little out of kilter

I meant of course 250 kph and 260 kph respectively, which equates to 155 and 163 mph (approx)Couldn't find a video showing HUD, only this. I swear you can see the fuel guage needle dropping......
