I've just collect the above and what a machine it is!!
Couple of questions.
Firstly, the car when i D always seems to start off in 2nd gear. Is this correct? If not how do i adjust it so that it starts from junctions and stops in 1st gear?
Secondly, on the I Drive can i switch the display around and have the map on the larger section on the left and the computer info on the right? At the moment the map is on the left and is tiny!!

Thanks in advance!

Firstly, never drive in D mode if you value your clutch and sanity. Always drive in paddlle mode. It'll take some getting used to but its worth it for the improved driver experience. I couldn't imagine a car without paddles now.

Secondly, turn the computer part OFF and the map will go full screen. Or just use the HUD for map details.

If same as e63 m6 then D with the second or higher gear change setting selected will stop it selecting 2nd to set off and coming to a stop in 2nd.

I use paddles 99% of the time... much more fun!

Christ, is the automatic mode (D) really that bad? I mean I intend on using the paddles most of the time but still

Yes, it is terrible. Jerky as hell.
To onlookers it must look like you cannot drive because of the way the car lurches.
Paddles or use the stick.

Pah! The automatic mode can be easily mastered... Granted, it is not creamy smooth as the torque converter in my 540i, but it is not as bad as anyone here tries to make it...

how would you recommend it is easily mastered?

and is it that detrimental to the clutch?

There is a perceived slowing down of gearchanges even in D5 compared to flappy 5. Whether this introduces any clutch slip I don`t know. I drove in D4 early this morning en route to Heathrow and was very thankful for it at 4am. I don`t think there`s any real problem with it when you`re just getting from A to B. Personally when I`m tired I like its more relaxed gait. Kind of like putting a pair of brothel-creepers on and wafting.

As for the clutch nay-sayers, I think a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

2nd gear pull offs are much harder on the clutch. Much more slippage occurs.

What he said...

As to how I mastered it - I drive in D2 around London and when wafting on the motorways, and in MDM S5 when I am out to play. When in D mode, I have noticed, on my car, that a little ease of the throttle, ala driving a normal car, makes up changes really smooth. It is worth noting that I have the latest SMG software, which may be better than the early cars...

I am not sure about that 2nd gear starts on level ground put that much more strain on the clutch. It is computer controlled, which means that the slip is far-far better modulated than any of us can ever achieve. I used D2 anyway...

wasnt aware that the auto mode is hard on the clutch so thats another reason for me not to use it lol... but I found it isnt hard to get it to be smooth, however the reason I have quickly stopped using it is that in the low gears it decides to change up when i'm not expecting which i find distracting.

using the paddles is so easy anyhow... In P400 mode I change up using the paddles and allow the car to change down automatically.

Whats surprised me is how good the traction control is, its actually turning out to be miles better in the wet that my E36 M3 dispite the extra weight and power.

Sorry off topic slightly but does anybody turn off MDM when the roads are wet?

Well, i've tried it again this morning in D and it still defaults to starting in 2nd gear each time i start the engine or come to a junction and have to stop. The moment i manually put the shift mode into 2 or 3 it starts in first gear but once the engine is shut down and restarted again it seems to default to shift mode 1 and 2nd gear! The only thing i can think of is a snow mode that it's defaulted into?
any ideas? By the sounds of it your cars seem to start in the last mode you left it in which is what my last CSL did from memory.

60% of the time i drive in D (mode) i crank the box settings up to 3/4 and just take my big toe of teh throttke when i feel its going to change gear.

Your car's behaviour is perfectly normal. It defaults to D1 when the engine is turned off. Suits me fine as I cannot be bothered to tone it down for the Mrs and she uses it 50% of the time

Having studied the clutch on these cars in some depth i can wholeheartedly say that pulling off from a standstill in 2nd gear is much harder on the friction surfaces than if you were pulling away in 1st. It requires more effort to get the car moving in the first place as the torque effect from the engine output is reduced by the higher gearing in the gearbox. It creates far more slippage before the locking of friction surfaces as it takes longer to get the drivetrain turning at the same speed as the engine.

I know this is a computer controlled system but the mechanics are exactly the same as any other manual box (remember this is not an auto box at all).
