Would you take a 'punt' on a 90,000mile E60 M5
Discussion
I have been seriously thinking of getting one of these, currently drive a E60 530d, and need to scratch an itch so to speak. I have been looking at 06/07 cars around the £20-£25k mark with 40,000 miles give or take, and then this popped up today
Its an 06 car with 90,000, FSH to date and in excellent condition apparently
I havent looked at the car itself yet and its for sale at a non franchised dealer without the backup BMW warranty.
Price £15k
Crazy?
I know its not the sort of car to take a punt on, but sometimes heyho,
I would have money as backup ok if something went pop and im guessing an aftermarket warranty wouldnt be of any use with those miles on an M5.
Anyone done anything similiar and regretted it or not even

In a few years there will be a lot of people taking a punt on a 90K + M5.
They can be very expensive to fix when they go wrong.
A good warranty at that mileage would be difficult to source.
As a similar example, my last car was an RS6 which i bought with 95K on the clock.
No warranty, and within a year I had spent over 5K just maintaining the car without tyres, insurance, tax, fuel etc.
An expensive hobby! I imagine had I kept it I would have needed another 5K next year to keep it in running order.
As has been said before by many others, these type of cars were expensive when new, and they are expensive to maintain. Massive fun, but they can quickly drain your spare income.
Driving wise, the M5 is very hard to beat. What a car, comfort, speed and handling all combined in harmony.
I can safely say my M5 is the best car I have ever owned, and I really cannot see why I would swap it in the next few years. It does it all.
Good luck whichever way you go.

I bought a near 90k E60 M5 a couple of months ago... done 2k with no issues at all paid around 15k for it as well.
I also don't have a warranty and if that seems like madness then best you pay the extra 4k to buy a lower mileage car (with same spec) and extra min 2k a year (as bmw servicing etc is typically double the cost of good independants) and have the bmw warranty.

If the car is fully 'ramped & stamped' by main dealers you can still get the BMW 'Named component' warranty, pay for it monthly and it should be good for when the car hits 100K+ too.
Its not really the 'if it breaks' that will get you, its the tyres and the tax (£460 a year on an 06), fuel (most never see 20mpg) and so on.
Its common for people to say "OMG not without a warranty!" but the same can be said for a 4 year old Alfa or Renault. Diesel pumps are expensive on modern cars.

Yes, but you make the decision to buy the car already knowing about the "guaranteed" costs - tyres, tax, insurance, fuel etc.Its common for people to say "OMG not without a warranty!" but the same can be said for a 4 year old Alfa or Renault. Diesel pumps are expensive on modern cars.
These should never surprise you.
Thats why it is common to have the warranty debate.....do you, or do you not hedge against the unknown..
2k a year in servicing? What kind of mileage is that on? I've owned my M5 for two and a half years and have barely spent half that on servicing (main dealer too) But again then I bought smart with a car that had just had new tyres, pads and discs all round so I've just had plugs, oil and filters serviced.
Trust me, as I've recently found out, the BMW backed warranty is worth its weight in gold should you be visited by the red cog of expense.
