Has anyone gone for the BMW Seal and Protect treatment?

My new machine had it done about 6 months ago by the previous owner but I am just checking that it is ok to use after-market polish / wax / leather treatment etc after having the seal and protect applied?

My apologies if that is a really stupid question!

In my experience it's a paint sealant and usually some kind of stain guard on the interior. As such it's bound to wear off and will do so sooner if you use strong cleaning products on it. I had a 3 month old dealer car once with it on and I'd say that the lifespan of the "treatment" was 6 months at best. As far as I can tell the seal and protect works by bonding with the surface (paint work, upolstery etc) and then preventing external elements from bonding with it.

If you're already using waxes etc as part of the wash then you're adding your own protection anyway, but with a more realistic expectation of how long the protective properties are likely to last. That said, these products are getting better. I've used a couple this year that have clung on a lot longer than expected.

Assuming you've seen the same marketing claims as me, the only way your car would stay shinier for years is if you didn't wash it and then just tried to get it all off in one go at the end of the lease ;-)

I'd just go ahead and use cleaners, wax etc and not worry about how much I'm depleting the magical protective field.

Thanks for the info very interesting.

Yes according to the marketing blurb the BMW Seal and Protect is supposed to last 3 years! They supply you with all the BMW cleaning products including a car shampoo which doesnt seem to be that strong probably for the reasons you have mentioned. I think I will take your advice and proceed with some really good quality waxes and cleaners and see how it goes. Might ring BMW just to confirm but I've got a feeling they will insist that I use their BMW products provided with the Seal and Protect.

If anyone has any further info or experience with Seal and Protect that'd be much appreciated.

Thanks

I had seal and protect thrown in with an e60 I bought, msport lemans blue. I was actually there when they did it and it is best described as a deep wax on the outside and a protector on the inside, I did 100k in the car over 2 years and besides a hand wash that car looked as good when I gave it back as the day I got it. The guy at BMW said just a simple wash is all it will need,, and I am normally a once a week wash and polish guy. The rain used to just fall off the paintwork, and I would think about it if I bought another. £500 is steep though.

Good to hear a positive review of the seal and protect! I think what I'm going to do is see how it goes maybe try this autoglym high def wax I've gone for but stay clear of polishing to prevent it removing the seal and protect. Not sure if this is the best way forward but I can't see it doing any harm.

See my post in your other thread. I don't know if mine has the seal and protect jobby, but I use either AutoSmart Carunuba Wax or Autoglym High Definition Carunuba Wax on mine. It leaves a nice waterproof finish and the water beads on the bonnet and just runs off when at speed.

After reading loads of reviews I went for the Turtle Wax Platinum leather cleaner and protector. It's very good. I applied it with a stout brush to get on all the cracks and creases in the leather. Wiped it off and the. Applied it again and massaged it into the leather by hand. Used quite a lot! I left it on the leather for a few minutes to soak in and hydrate the leather and then wiped off the excess with a cloth. Came up really well. Most of the creases have gone, it feels like new again.

Don't personally think it will be a problem at all. Seal and protect is basically BMW's poshed up version of supaguard or something similar. Back in 08 BMW were still offering cars with supaguard and as far as I can tell it's just a change of name with an added price increase now.... My car (a M3 CS as well!) had that applied as an aftersales addon last year when I bought it and since then has a few rounds of super resin polish and high def wax applied to it with no issues.

P.S Good choice on the car! thumbup
