How long should a dealer take to complete an oil service?

My dealer phoned this morning to organise an oil service that's due in 800 miles. No probs there, I'm happy they phoned me as it shows they are doing thier job. However, the service rep (a woman I have not spoken to before) told me they'd need the car for an entire day as with it being an M car its much more time consuming than a standard car oil service.

When I get my indy to do the same oil service (i get him to do it between main dealer servicing, every 4k or 1 year, whichever is soonest) it only takes an hour or so. Is he missing something or is it BS from my dealer who is normally very good indeed. Was the service rep waffling?

I don't want to upset them by questioning thier practices but at the same time I won't stand for being ripped. Any thoughts? Surely it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to complete inc the software updates.

Eddie,

Should not be more than 2hrs including software updates. Mine is an AUC and was told by BMW that it is running the 2010 software, thus there is nothing to update.

To drop the oil, replace oil filter element, replace two climate control filter elements, re-set service indicator and give the car a quick once over should not be more than 1hr.

Perhaps they are looking at it as one of the bigger oil services - you know the whole thing about every 3d one means doing spark plugs, gearbox, diff, air filters etc?

The big plug job was the last one I had so I'm back to the first basic oil change again. I think I need to speak to the tech again.

Mechanics in the dealer closest to me gets 20 minutes to do an oil service, is it that much more to do one on an M5 than a normal 5 series?

They've admitted it'll only take an hour to do the job, but 'I should expect a delay if the final litre calibration causes problems', that's why they allow a day on modern M's apparently. Bluff called! I'll be waiting with the car and not leaving it for the day.

Maybe they just want the car there for the whole day so they can do the service at a time that suits them rather than holding you to a specific hour of the day.Obviously they will not be charging you for an entire days labour as this would cost a fortune.

The job should only be an hours labour,it just depends which 'hour' of the day they can fit it in.

Isn't it quite amusing how the stealers don't like us waiting there on the premises?

I usually wait and keep an eye on things.....I've seen and heard too many horror stories!

Stick to your guns Eddie!

PS Where in Scotland are you from??

Ha! The question that haunts me for all of time.

Originally from Rowner in Portsmouth, but moved to Dumbarton, outside Glasgow as a kid for a few years and picked up that viral accent. Despite spending the past 15 years in the south the twang won't shift. Lol

Ignorant question, and a bit of a potential thread hijack also but my M6 has gone through about 0.7 lts of oil over the last 4k miles or so, what oil is used? And am I ok to just "top it up "?

Yes and yes. Castrol edge (non sport version) 10w60. Opie oils is the best bet.

Erm, sort of.

Yes its normal. The oil is Castrol Edge (not Edge Sport), it is 10w60. But, you shouldn't just top it up as you see fit. You have to wait until the car tells you to and you must add exactly 1 litre for the calibration to work. It'll come up on the idrive and on the dash when the time comes.

Small world Eddie.....I'm from Milngavie, a slightly posher place just up the road from Dumbarton.

However, having lived in Essex for 20 years, I'm reliably informed (when I go up north) that I sound like an English poofter!!

Yeah, I know the feeling. When I'm down here everyone thinks I have the broadest of Scottish accents, yet when I head back to the hole up north I'm hounded for sounding English. The English are not popular up there. LOL.

I hate the place!

Sounds like the secretary being put on the spot and making it up/waffling as she goes along. Ask her the same question three times during different parts of the conversation and you'll get a different answer everytime.

Well, it seems the problem was as suggested: A robot / simple service rep.

Today my regular service girl (enter joke here) called me to follow up the previous conversation and arrange a booking that suited my diary. Having been told by the first girl that under no circumastances would they do a saturday service on an M car, Jerry said that it would be no problem at all to do a saturday morning so long as i didnt mind sitting in the showroom for an hour or so. Winner!

Also, the cost is only going to be £245 (or less if im not due a intake microfilter change). Scotthall do a discount programme for cars beyond 3 years old. Win again!

And..... lol. Im back out in an F10 again on friday. No real reason this time, was offered another spin so i took it. Maybe i'll take my video camera this time.

Got the car serviced today. Hoorah!!

All in it came to £340 which is more than the estimate but it did need a couple more items. It had a full oil service, microfilter replacment and an intake silencer service. All done within 90 mins so no crap about having to leave it for the day. Got my healthy discount for being a regular pain in the ass too. lol

Hats off to Scotthall S'ton again for thier excellent work.
