Z4M servicing intervals and thoughts needed???
Discussion
I went to look at a car at a deaer on Saturday and the car seemed in good general condition.
In the advert the car was described as having FBMWSH when i arrived the dealer said he definately had the service book but he couldn't find it but he said he would
I left a small deposit on the condition that the service history could be found and it was all documented. I am now being told he can't find the book but it has been serviced by BMW to an extent (i rung up their customer care centre).
The servicing carried out is as follows:
1342 - Running in
12150 - Oil Service
24000ish - Inspection I
36260 - Oil Service
49150 - Inspection I ???????
plus various other warranty work. As the existing warranty has exipired the dealer is saying BMW charge an inspection fee of £238 and that even the comphrehensive BMW warranty isn't that great. They are offering Autoprotect. To me it sounds suspiously like the Inspection 2 service was not carried out and the service history is therefore patchy/incomplete there is also no service book and not a lot of paperwork for any work carried out before the delaer obtained the car.
I spoke to a friend who is a Tech at BMW and one of the dealers who serviced the car and he said that the next service should have definately have been an Inspection II. The suppling dealer has said "Service is by indication and the most recent service carried out was according to the service indicator".
Opinions would be welcome? My inital thoughts are to walk on the basis the car is not described as previously agreed.

The car has been with the Dealer since 49000 ish when it was serviced and has only done a few miles since 200 or so.
This was also another option that the dealer could get the rest of the work done (this may be where the other ££££ is coming from) to obtain the warranty.
But i still feel that the car isn't as described i.e. there is no service book or documented service history and the last inspection hasn't been carried out fully.

Just out of interest ... it wasn't this one was it? As that's my old one!

That last service should definitely have been an Inspection II, that along with no physical service book and I'd walk away!
Hope you manage to find a good example of another.

the inspection 2 is very important. Service book can be "rebuilt" by sending one around all the dealers that serviced it, and getting them to stamp it again based on electronic records, but this is a pain if it's been as several different dealers over it's life

The agreement was that BMW warranty was attainable and that the service history was in placed and documented but now the only information i am getting is from BMW's records which clearly show a discrepancy.
There are enough good ones out there so i think ill walk on this one, cheers for the advice!
Ah, just thought it might of been as the mileage matched up.
I sold it to that dealer just over 12 months ago, so it's had another owner since me. It mentions in the advert how they sold it and have just taken it back in again. I gave it the oil service around 40k so the recent one that's been done should of been the Inspection II.
It's a solid car and gave me no trouble at all.

If it had the Inspection I a few '00 miles ago and everything else on the car is to your liking then re-negotiate the deal in your favour if you can and get the additional bits done, ( g/box and diff oils from memory) by a BMW dealer.
Missing service book is no biggie, imo, if BMW CS have given you the above information.
ETA, may need Valve clearences doing too if they are/were not done at Insp I, the selling dealer is talking BS about 'car tells you which service is due/needed' as there is a set pattern to follow.

Valve clearnces are not done on an inspection 1. My understanding is that this is the big cost difference between 1 and 2Missing service book is no biggie, imo, if BMW CS have given you the above information.

They are supposed to be done on both inspections. The main differences between Insp 1 & 2 are spark plug, diff oil & gearbox oil changes.
It's part of the reason Insp 1 & 2 on an ///M are at least twice the price of a non-///M - as to do it properly takes 2 hours minimum.

Wrong, valve clearances are always done on either Inspection I or Inspection II. The difference in cost comes from the extra fluids for the gearbox and differential, which are not cheap as well as the labour needed to do it, Inspection II also includes spark plugs, which alone are about £70 even from ECP... pilchardthecat said:

I think they are too. Some dealers only charge £100 difference between Insp I and II...........
OP, one thing you have not mentioned is brake fluid changes, if it has not been done in the last couple, 3 at an absolute push, it will also need doing.

The car has had a brake fluid change at 36000 miles and new front discs at this point.
It has also had two new tyres recently and new pads all round.
The main sticking point is the dealer is insisting that the inspection I is correct although there is no proof it is or is not and looks to be incorrect (hence why history is so important).
If the dealer were to pay the inspection cost to get the BMW warranty and get the additional items done (£600ish minimum + a contribution towards the warranty that he offered) then i may reconsider but as it stands this is looking unlikely given that he wouldn't budge on the original asking price.
I have stated that it looks like there is going to be a lot of time and expense required to put everything right probably a good few hours over a few weeks to get all the correct stamps and invoices together. If the dealer was willing to pay for the additonal bits and get BMW to confirm that the warranty would be valid in writing then maybe the car would be acceptable as i could chase the paperwork.
I am concious of purchasing the car and then being told the warranty is not valid as i don't have the complete service hsitory and documentation available.
Cheers for all the additional information ill pass on another message and see where it ends up.
