Hello all. Well I have achieved a personal goal of mine and just placed a deposit on a 2006/56 E60 M5. in Silverstone 2 with extended leather, active seats, roof. 34000 miles Full BMW service, which I will be promptly shoving in the BMW service managers face, to gain an extended warranty. I hope this car will be eligible for a warranty.

The car is mint and untouched. I take delivery of the car on Wednesday. I can't wait for the drive home in it. I have read the sticky buyers guides and I am aware of the pitfalls of ownership. Great topics.

I tend to keep my cars for a long time, I find it difficult to sell a car, so this means I still have my last four cars, bit of a parking headache now I have to make space for the M5. This brings me onto a sticky point for the purist and indeed my future wallet. The last 3 of my 4 cars have been in my all time favorite colour Estoril blue, with 4th being Range Rover Monte Carlo Blue, very similar colour. I have access to a insurance approved body shop (Fathers business).

I cannot help thinking that the E60 M5 will look stunning in my favorite hue.
My concerns are:
a) - Although the finish of the paint and car will be second to none, I feel people may feel that the car was once in a bump and the colour was changed during repair. This happens quite a lot.
b) - May get the purists beige y-fronts all knotted up.
c) - Negative effect on value???? Change of colour on logbook.

What are you opinions on this potential colour change?

Get the popcorn out, this might get interesting.

If you feel that strongly about the colour, I can't help but think you would have been better off compiling a list of "must have" and "nice to have" options/features and using this to guide your purchasing decision. In other words... you should have bought a blue one?!

Congratulations on your purchase. I kind of agree with what Peter says but seeing as you are planning on keeping the car for a long time I cannot see a problem there. Just check with BMW that the new paint job isn't going to void your warranty. Would a wrap be more sensible so you can remove it come resale time?

Yes, I did that. My top "must" was as low mileage as possible within my price range. To be fair I am not a fan of Interlagos.

A wrap might be a good idea, thanks. Its not that I don't like Silverstone2, it is a stunning colour, just not my colour.

Get a wrap from raccoon. That will preserve the value by protecting the paintwork underneath and can be removed come sale time (leaving an unmodified car which will be easier to sell)

Good luck on Wednesday. Enjoy the drive home and take the long way back!

Fabulous cars.

I don't think the paint change will be a problem, just take some photos as it's going in and during the painting process so that any future buyer has the reassurance that it wasn't damaged and was a quality paint job.

Academic really though, as you won't want to sell it....ever! smokin

Thanks for the congrats. smile Do you think a wrap company could match the estoril colour?
If they could I would go down this route, to get an idea of how the car looks. I know the depth of shine would not be there and that may drive me crazy... Got a small dose of O.C.D (if it's possible to only have a small dose).

A question for all the detailers out there. Has anyone measured paint depth on a factory paint E60?

Definately get it wrapped. A total respray in a different colour (by which I'm assuming you would strip the car and paint the shell), would cost mega money and also potentially make the car very hard to sell on.

The B12 is a big car, so by deduction the E60 should look good. smile

As stated further up the thread, my old man has a couple auto refinishing businesses. The cost would be negligible, and I don't plan on selling any time soon. By the time I sell the car will be so old the paint colour may be regarded as novelty.

If you got OCD don't get it wrapped mate. You will be disappointed. I had my previous m3 wrapped White. I loved it but the finish was far from perfect up close. Was properly done by racoon and was well done but no substitute for paint. It also starts to look a little rough round the edges after a year or so. Try to get a look at a wrapped car before you make a decision. Would I do it again. Probably not

A dealership has no say in whether or not you can purchase the warranty - if being able to purchase the warranty is important to you go to http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/CarDetails.asp... and try to get a quote. I'm guessing you'll need to contact them by phone to see if cover can be added.

I'd also mention the colour change. The BMW /Mondial warranty states that cover will be voided if the car is modified in any way.
You'd best check (& get in writing) before spending a grand on the warranty.

Hi,

As you can get professional level re-sprays done at very little cost indeed coupled with the fact you intend to keep the car very long term, I'd say indeed, get the car painted. If you didn't have access to a bodyshop, then I'd have said go for the wrap option.

As per another recent thread, if you go for a wrap, do indeed go for the higher end specialists. No business, even the top end ones can produce 100% results every time, but you do stand a batter chance. The poster who said their wrap wasn't so good right from the start and then after a year peeled etc, has had bad luck. There's Bugatti Veyrons, Merc SLR 722's and other hyper cars that are wrapped and have been so for over a year now and they're still pristine - it's not like they're stored away either, they're actually used quite a lot. Point is, if £300,000 plus cars are having wraps done, then on your £20-30K M5 you can certainly keep as an option.

Yes, the purists will have heart palpitations at anything non-oem, but it isn't their car.

Even here on PH, there's more 'oem' esque types for the BMW sections, which is fine of course! I'm not one of them, and as you say Estoril is your favourite colour, then I'd suggest being different and follow the example of another car I've seen and do it matt estoril blue! another car was done in matt melbourne red - paint, not wraps by the way. Something like this is keeping the oem looks and adding a design twist that's unique! - I'd love my E39 Touring in sepang bronze for instance.. there's other choices too, but no need to cover those as you have your colour choice decided.

One thing is, if you do decide to go for the paint, invest if you haven't done so, a high quality camera and take good clear pictures every step of the way with the car and the re-spray job. If you ever do come to sell the car, you can use the evidence to support there's not been any accident damage reasons for the colour change. Of course, in 5-10 years time if you come to sell the car then, buyers do walk away because of the colour change, there'll be plenty left who'll still go for the car - mainly the enthusiast sector of the market. Never know, that buyer could be me!

Good luck whichever way you go, be interesting if you keep a thread going here of the route you take smile

Cheers, Dennis!
