As per the subject really. I'm really struggling between these two cars. Got a back to back drive lined up next week which will probably answer a lot of questions.

Head is saying E92 M3 will be the more fun car, has the better image and probably the less costly to own.

Heart is saying "V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10 V10"

M5 not an option before anyone suggests the obvious smile (I don't want one - don't like the image)

I say the V10, would it hold more value seeing as it has lost more initially?

The noise too, and your number plate should sway it for you wink

I can always tippex out the 1 and make the 0 into an 8 with a rusty screw wink

With a good E46 still around 10k I'm not sure there's much movement left in the E92 in the immediate future. I'd have also thought with the FX M6 due in the next year or so that was a bigger threat...

But then I don't know anything smile

Not do I!

I'd have thought the v10 will be more lusted after as I assume the new M6 will be V8 TT?

Enjoy your drives!

& will therefore attract the same crowd that is attracted to the E46, and that will affect values.

Hmmm, good point.

So, if you planned to own BOTH, which would be the first one? I guess M3 would be the better first buy, so you don't get spoilt by the M6 power.

Perhaps the M3 short term and M6 is the better long term.

Bah.

I'd get an early (cheap) E92, and be on the lookout for a minter E63 that hopefully will be dropping at a faster monetary rate. Fuel consumption issues need to be considered.

As it stands mileage MPG a real concern.

I've had both - had a DCT M3, then a M6, now back to a DCT M3...!

What I loved about the e63 - the looks (I know Im probably in a minority here), great presence, rare, awesome engine, great seats & nice interior (in full leather) all the toys..
Didn't like - boom from the exhaust when pooling around (the idle speed drones at 900rpm), crude gearbox in slow speed traffic, dated Sat Nav, ludicrously impractical for such a big car, tiny rear seats that don't fold down, terrible MPG in town (95% of my driving), only really comes alive at license losing speeds.

What I love about the M3 - IMO amazing engineering value for money (when looking at the alternatives), wonderful to drive at all speeds, relaxing around town & a sports car elsewhere, immensely practical, much MUCH better MPG, especially with stop start models, probably double the M6 in real world,

Don't like - bit quotidian in the looks & interior? That's about all..

Lost about £20k on the M3 in 2 years (bought new before the crash!), £13k on the M6 in 18 months, buying an older one will of course be cheaper, but I had a lot of things go wrong on the M6 in 18 months, mostly covered by warranty, but not all - gearbox, wiring loom in the mirrors, telematics unit, headlamp.. The M3 didn't cost me anything but one service, and was faultless.

Glad I experienced the M6 but I wouldn't buy one again - if I wanted something impractical & fun I'd get a 911..

Thank, very interesting smile

I made a point of watching some reviews of the M3 and M6 last night. Watched the Top Gear M3 first, thought "Must have one, looks so cool".

Started watching the fifth gear M6 review, thinking how dull the car looks as standard. Then tiff set up the M settings and it made me really excited with all the customable options (I'm a geek at heart).

Back to square one.

I'm no expert having owned neither, but I have driven a DCT M3 at Brands which was great fun smile

I think it's hard to call the depreciation over the next 12 months but I would have thought longer term the M6 would lose less due to its rarity and uniqueness. As we all know, BMW will not be making another naturally aspirated V10 engine in a hurry and I think for that reason (and despite the imperfect gearbox) the V10 M cars will slowly become sought after. All IMO of course smile

Didn't actually drive the M6, but edo took me out in his and gave it a good going over.

Lovely cars to be in, much nicer than the M3, and so fast, but seemed to lack some of the rawness the M3 has. Plus as great as SMG 1 is, I still covet a proper manual, so that's swung it towards the M3.

Think there is a big market for 20k M3s, E46 stayed around that price for some time. Compared to the M5 which will continue to drop as it is seen as more complicated and thirsty IMO. E39 dropped faster than E46, would expect the same from E60 and E90/92

If I was ready for an M5, I'd go e60, but I think they have the wrong image for where I am in life at the moment hehe

If it makes any difference I've just bought one and I'm closer to 24 than 23 (going on for 50 with an M5 though laugh).

I do think they're great cars, would love to check yours out sometime, but... without wanting to sound like a total prick (for a change), the female perception of a car is also fairly important to me which is why the M3 is currently winning.

An M5 does shout family car.

Anyways. You are welcome to a nose around any time, can't be more than 15 mins apart.

I'd love a nose around your 635 too!

Interesting JB, as you know I am looking at M6 vs 996 TT vs SL55, want something usable but a bit raw too, was worried the M6 may be too usable which is what your suggesting? Hopefully testing an SL55 tomorrow or Sat morning, will let you know how I get on......
