after my thread here the other day, i was browsing m3 ads and come across a mint m3 e36 with only 22k on the clock in yellow which is a fab colour, ideally id prefer an e 46 but for the money i have they'd be higher milage, now my question is, what would be the top book price for a e36 m3, 1996 coupe with that kind of milage? surely there is only so much it could be worth, maybe plus a grand as its outstanding, but the guy is asking 10k nearly, is that too much? i think so, what are your opinions? as i guess as its exceptional its what people are prepared to pay, i was hoping to strike a deal as he is interested in my tvr, but its only probably worth 7k ish
It's this one, right?

Do you want a bright yellow pre-facelift M3 with cloth interior and bus steering wheel? If so, pay it a visit.
Key things I'd be looking at is whether it's been driven regularly for short distances or been laid up for years. Note that the tyres were replaced as they had perished; they same will apply to other rubber components.
As to it's value, difficult to guage as not many similar in the market. Whatever someone is willing to pay. One thing I would say is that it's going to depreciate once you start driving it and putting on some miles. Not something you could say with cheaper, higher mileage Evos.
I think I'd struggle to justify paying over 8k for it, just on the basis of what else I could buy for that cash but if it's the car you want, then it might be worth more to you.

I'd add that people don't usually let 40k cars depreciate without being driven unless they can easily afford the loss, in which case some negotiation in price should be possible. I suspect that the current owner has already bought the car from Lady Rothchild and is looking to make a profit, so some haggling required.
i agree i dont think its worth any where near that, i just wanted others to confirm what i thought, sorry cant open the link but yes its a yellow one up north, i quite like yellow and surely it wont depreciate as much as say a 10 grand e46? however all cars depreciate so thats to be expected, personally i wouldnt want to pay much more than 7 and a half grand, another with 36k on the clock just been sold on PH i think it was for about 6 and a half, thanks again for the help chaps, ill get haggling, the bloke is interested in my TVR so a straight swap would suit
I'll watch this thread with interest as I have been deliberating over the very same car and another yellow 3.0 both at the very top of their price bracket. As someone on a thread I started said its very easy to spend £2K getting the parts sorted that will almost certainly have deteriated over that past 10-15 years. Add this to the purchase price and they start to look very expensive.

I'm no expert but the figure of around 7.5k you mentioned would seem about right to me. The biggest downside with the car in question is that its got few miles on it and I'm guessing the seller is hoping a collector of some description would want it because if you pay £10k and drive it then you will spunk a load of money. There are some really nice E46 M3's for that money. Granted they cost considerably more to look after but they wont lose as much as this car will lose if you drive it. Saw a really nice imola red M3 in autotrader, low miles, had all the work done, 1 owner from new and it was less than this car.

i must say i do prefer older cars, im not into traction control, or electric seats or tv's stuck on the back of the seats, just adds weight as far as im concerened, so an older one would suit me really, ( i drive a TVR at the mo, which couldnt be much more basic lol, but i love that, no weight and big engine)talking of loosing money, it would only loose more if you were stupid enough to pay the asking price, but if it was a more realistic figure then it wouldnt i dont think cos decent lower milage e36's seem to go fro are higher five or lower six grand so on the basis that you add a grand on for ultra low milage, i recon it would hold that as they may get rarer oer the years

Without looking at it, there is no way to know whether it's in better condition than a car with 70k but has a whole load or recent parts and work. A lot of components wear purely through age not mileage (or lack of use). It could have done 22k in the first 2 years and then sat in a garage for the last 13.There are some really nice E46 M3's for that money. i agree but it has a fresh mot so id like to think that all the important perishabe components are in order, plus i used to own a 328i years ago and it looked as though most of the components were original and it ran sweet, so is a dry, garaged car likely to perish more or less than a car thats been out in all weathers such as salt, snow sub zero temperatures, sun, humid, rain and damp for 15 years? BMW's are made of very good quality parts afer all, aren't they?

[quote=TEKNOPUG]All I'm saying is buy on condition - whether it's 22k or 65k. I'm not sure that it's worth paying a 2 or 3k premium just because it has 40k less miles.
thats what i have to decide and also while im asking opinions, id say its worth a bit more, assuming its first class but no where near his asking price, like i said, i recon 7 and a half seems fair as its extra low milage, any way, i e mailed him earlier and he is interested in my tiv so lets see what he comes back with, if he would go that low, it could be a straight swap as the chim is easily worth 7 and a half grand

[quote=mysteron35]I cant open the add now, but had a look on my iphone the other day, I know this car, it belonged to a friend of mine here i Norfolk.
He was the second owner so I guess the seller hasn't added his name to the log book?
Steve.
interesting, so they guy deals in a few cars, i read his profile and he is a mechanic, so he must sell a few, which i guess isnt the end of the world, is it a genuine car do you know? thanks for the input by the way!

Hi Andy,
I cant speak for the seller, but I do know my mate was the second owner, I believe the mileage is genuine and the service book backs this up, but if I remember the car has been off the road for some time, so the last service would have been some time ago.
It also had a small dent in the rear N/S from when it just kissed the garage door post, nothing bad.
I'm sure it needed a bit of mechanical work, ie bushes etc, my mate was really into M3's and used to be well known for importing E30's from Italy, so knows his M3's, and would only have bought it if it was a good car.
Hope this helps,
Steve.

Never trust a car that's had a recent engine. Why would someone spend loads of money to get it done, then sell it. IMO http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3574826.htm
