Thinking of buying M6
Discussion
Hi Guys
Just been for a test drive in a 2006 BMW M6 and thinking of buying a Porsche 997 C2S or a BMW M6.
Looking at using it as a daily driver.
After some advice regarding purchasing and what to look out/reliability issues with the M6.
Also what price should I be paying for a 2006 car with approx 30,000 miles? They seem to vary from aroung £20k up to £28k!!
Cheers
Rich

I paid £24k for my 2006 M6 from a BMW main agent back in November. As regards buying guides, read the M5 buying guide stickied at the top of this forum. Evo also did a buying guide about 8 months ago that is worth purchasing. I'm using mine as a daily drive and it is absolutely brilliant. Not much under £80k will compare with the quality and performance. An astonishing car, just make sure you get one with a BMW warranty.
I use mine as a daily driver, no problem at all but expect mpg in the low teens. As long distance cruiser it is unbeatable. I have wanted a 997 for a long time but in terms of practicality I find it so compromised in respect of space and carrying capacity that I could not consider it and in terms of refinement it's not up there either in my opinion. Add in the V10 and it's no contest, hugely underrated and just intoxicating.....
What did you think of it during/in the hazy afterglow of said test drive?
I got mine in the fires of some truly absurd alternatives because it did for me better than everything at twice the price when nearly new in 2006.
Occasionally think of alternatives but then take it to Orion's Shoulder and order is restored.
If it were in a Spaghetti Western, it would be Lee Van Cleef.
Only hedge fund activity or uncorking a convenient legacy can avail you of something appreciably finer.

Had an M6 myself. Did test drive a porsche 997 2s. Regretted not going for the 911 ever since.
But then I have no kids and the slight extra practicality (or ratehr capacity) of the M6 was lost on me. As was the stonking performance. just made me frustrated more, due to not having anywhere to stretch it's legs.
a 911 will lose out on carrying capacity, but will win on having a stronger badge cred, being lighter and more capable on track should you wish to take it there. Did a couple of straight line runs on track in an M6, but didn't fancy tracking it, due to cost/weight
Again my vote, 911

I had a 997 C2S for 3 years - immense, superb at everything and actually surprisingly capable of swallowing big loads (for 2 people anyway......).
At 25k you're looking at the bottom end of the market and risking something that will need big money spending on it in some shape or form..... Tyres, brakes, service etc..
And personally I wouldn't touch either of these cars without a warranty. You need 30k to get a well bolted C2S, much less though for the M6.
The 911 is a challenging, quite unique driving experience. My only regret was selling it. 100% recommended. Do it.

Some interesting and well made comments here. The last post in particular addresses purchase price and I agree you will not get a c2s for £25000 with the sort of miles those M6's are. That said if you spend £30 on the C2S it will probably lose less value than an £25,000 M6 will over the next 3 years so as for ownership propersition could end up at similar or lower cost.
I think both cars offer very different things and I see merits with both. As a dad with kids the M6 is the more practical option and as a buy significantly cheaper in real terms if buying like for like ie mileage and age. I am sure I wouldn't be dissapointed with either. I have had the 911c2s on loan from porsche for a weekend and it was amazing. I have owned many top end BMW's over the last 12 years and love them.
As always buy well and you can always change it a year or so down the line and try the porsche! Something to look forward to maybe.

Have you had/driven an M6 before? Be interested to hear how it compares dynamically to the C2S...... I always assumed it would be a blunt in comparison, although with signficantly more power? I've not driven an M6 to be clear, just speculating from what I've read! But the M6 seems amazing value for money at the moment, I just wonder if it can really match the overall C2S experience?
Not the same comparison as you asked for but I own both a 996 GT3 and an E60 M5.
The Porsche is the more exciting car but I don't feel the M5 is blunt in comparison - in fact I find it very good fun. The Porsche is obviously more focussed but I like to feel I've got the best of both worlds.

Really like both. Driven an M6 and a 997 C2S. If you need the space go for the M6 if you don't, the 911 is more nimble, plenty quick enough, better on fuel and arguably cheaper to run.
I wouldn't worry too much about the badge thing. A 911 is a good car period...irrespective of the badge, as is an M6. Think the problem with the M6 is that you would be travelling everywhere at 120mph just to feel the power!

with regards to fuel M6 doews around 15-18MPG whilst the C2S easily achieves 25MGP

Yes I have driven three M6's in the past week along with 997 C2S in the past.
Was going to purchase a C2S around 3 and a half years ago but bought an Aston Martin V8 Vantage instead.
Still got the AM V8 but want a 4 seater for daily use.
The M6 is an awesome car which is also very comfortable.
C2S is a little sharper but havent driven one recently to compare. Need to arrange a test drive in a C2S.
With regards to prices 2006 M6 with 23,000 miles available for £24k with dealer warranty, whilst 2005 C2S with around 28,000 - 35,000miles available for around £28k.
