Sticking with what BMW specified then. Thanks chaps.
I will be keeping and eye on eBay for another set of genuine M5 alloys for my winter set. What tyres are recommended for //M winter driving. Vred's??
Also has anyone had wheels finished in an anthracite colour. I think it would look good against the silverstone body,

A bit of mis-information given in this thread.
20" wheels will not rub on any E60 as long as the correct offset and tyre sizes are used.
My M5 Touring is running 21" Hartge wheels (see profile for a pic) and you can't really tell the difference in ride quality to the OEM 19" 166s. The ride is still very compliant and not harsh.
Alot is to do with the the compatability and weight of the wheel as much as the size though.

The car I drove was awful, way way way short in ride quality compared to my e60 on 18's and it rubbed over every big dip in the road- these were bmw wheels too.
Sorry, but its been a while since Ive messed about with wheels on the 5er but from memory on a 20" wheel the offset should be around 18 to 25?, although if your friend was running OEM BMW 20" wheels, this should have been alright.
Notwithstanding this, the only 20" OEM wheels are off the last 7 series onwards or latest gen 5 and 6s which all have a bigger rolling radius, so if he's not changed the tyres might explain the rubbing (and also poor ride if they were the OEM run flats?)....very difficult to diagnose over the internet but theres definately something wrong as the E60s arches are massive!
My old 535d (see pic in garage)was running 20" AC Schnitzer wheels 9.5x20 255/30/20 fronts and 10.5x20 295/25/20 rears with no rubbing or arch work needed on standard MSport suspension. I would also say the ride quality was better than the standard car running 18" on run flats!
The M5 with its bigger rolling radius can accommodate up to 21" wheels without work.
Bottom line is to speak to a reputable tuner who has experience with these cars. Its been done a million times over and shouldnt, if done correctly cause any issues.
