F10 BMW M5 vs 2012 NISSAN GT-R (video)
Discussion
I know they are not direct rivals or competitors but, as a big BMW M car car, I have to say that that was still very painful to watch

I just hope the forthcoming M6 can put up a better fight than this to justify the nearly £30,000 premium it will carry over a GT-R.

In what way are they totally different?
seats 4 adults - snap
big boot - snap
reasonable running costs - snap
designed to be able to mix pressing on and cruising - snap
more electronics than you can throw a stick at - snap
more adjustments than you actually need - snap
I think they are pretty comparable against those criteria - please elaborate on why you disagree (other than being posted on the M part of the forum and therefore automatically anything not M is inferior)

Because one is a big comfy saloon car and the other is a 911 Turbo rival.seats 4 adults - snap

You compare an M5 with an RS6, E63, XFR etc.
It is very far from a reasonable comparison.

did nissan design the gt-r as a competitor to the m5? doubt it...you probably wouldn't choose a gt-r to take the family to the south of france in the summer.seats 4 adults - snap

i think most people would say they're incomparable, to try and explain it to someone is hard, you either understand it or you don't. it's a bit like lambda calculus. you don't bother explaining it to people, cos you either know or you don't.
Whether or not they are comparable depends on what you are looking for. I am looking for 4 seats, quick, reliable and capable of pressing on when in the mood.
Againt MY criteria they are in fact very comparable.
Might also be interesting to understand whether any of you have actually driven either? I thought not.

You don't have to have driven either to see they are not direct comparisons.Againt MY criteria they are in fact very comparable.

i think a stradivarius and a £100 violin are comparable. but then, i can't play a violin...Againt MY criteria they are in fact very comparable.

if you think they're comparable mate, you're probably not capable of exploring the limits of either.
unlike you, i won't make the presupposition, just imply it.

The genesis of that video was some bloke writing in and asking if there was anything else he should consider apart from an F10 M5....four seats and decent boot etc were requirements. It's out of left field but no harm as a comparison.....
But yes.....you aren't really going to have a short list of those two.

In my mind the M5 and GT-R are competitors... as stated both are top end, high performance ,supercar pace cars, that are very heavy and carry 4 or more people.
only real difference is that one has focused on luxury, the other on performance.
now the M5 is turbocharged as well there is room for a very wild special addition with much more power

Got to say you can't compare the 2! Price wise without a doubt, performance not a chance as the GTR is miles ahead!! I test drove one of these whilst I had my F10 on order and what a car it is!!!!
But its not a proper 4 seater that's why I didn't buy one and the only reason as I have already got my 2 seater toy
! I really think it's a rival/better than a 997t and both these cars destroy the M5 but what do you expect it is a family saloon?? To be honest I think Autocar are paying the M5 a massive compliment even comparing them, have they compared the GTR against the E63/XFR??

I owned an R35GTR at the same time as an Alpina B5 for a year (not quite an M5 but close enough to make some form of comment and I've driven the E60 M5 but not the new one yet). In no way are they similar cars. The GTR is an amazing tech-fest of Supercar, which is faster cross country than anything else I've ever owned. It's great that it's got a decent boot, but the rear seats are crap (it's not a proper 4 seater in any way) and it's a very firm car for wife/kids. Whenever I wanted to take the wife or kids anywhere we took the B5, if I was on my own or with mates it was the GTR.
I think the comparison is fun but meaningless. A proper comparison for the GTR is a 911 or R8 or M3 coupe. A proper comparison for an M5 is a B5 or an E55AMG or an S6 etc.

Finaly some one talking sense on this thread. My kids have left home. I drive an Z4M. I would consider a 911T or R35GTR, as a possible next car. I would not consider an M5, as I don't need a family saloon. Completly different cars, that happen to be similar price and 500+ BHP.I think the comparison is fun but meaningless. A proper comparison for the GTR is a 911 or R8 or M3 coupe. A proper comparison for an M5 is a B5 or an E55AMG or an S6 etc.

The comparison GTR vs M3 Coupe is interesting. When the GTR came out the price was in the same ball park. The GTR is massively quicker both in a straight line and round corners, the M3 is (like the M5) a comfortable 4 seater, rides better, sounds better, has an even better dual clutch gearbox, is more compact externally, is easier to see out of, and IMHO is more 'classy'. I had a thrilling drive in a friend's GTR, it is a marvellous machine, but I am happy with my M3. And that would not change even if the GTR still cost about the same as the M3.Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
