Sometimes when I accelerate the revs don't drop back down... For example at idle when I am at traffic lights in neutral. Quick blip of the throttle and the revs climb to say 4000 rpm but then they will stay there and not drop back
It does eventually, slowly, climb back down to just under 1000 rpm.
On the same journey when changing down gears the car doesn't sound right, revving a bit to high, presumably for the same reason.
I have noticed this 2-3 times in the last year when driving, only seems to happen when I use Tesco momentum fuel. Happened again this weekend was I out for a drive.
Is this something that bad fuel can cause? Or is my car just buggered lol

I have had the car for a year and a half now. It's just recently had it's service 2 (1 month ago)at a BMW main dealer.
Since the service though the service light on the dash has very quickly dropped down to 1 green square so something is wrong there as I can't have done more than 400 miles! Addtionally my oil light has started flashing 9 times when I turn it on. I wonder if they knocked some wiring or something.

Funnily enough mine has recently started doing that too. I always check the dipstick (level is fine) and trust this more than a light on the dash if i'm honest. I'm putting mine in for a service soon so will replace the sender unit as a matter of course. M3John said:

A google search seemed to reveal it was quite common on E36
I had a quote from BMW for faulty oil light sensor at £190.......and that include a staff discount my dad can get. Honestly I love cars and driving but I am starting to think I should just take up cycling instead.

mine did this recently and caused me a little concern, seemed to keep revs too much on gearchange and dropped to idle slower than normal... after a few hrs investigation turned out the soundproofing under the dash steering wheel area had come loose and was resting on the throttle mechanism a little.
