I moved from an M3 a year ago into a family wagon but about to move back into a more fun machine. I had fixed on a 911 but seriously reconsidering now because of the size (we have 3 kids). It works but only just. My E92 was such a great car and I miss it everyday so I am thinking about moving back to the fold but seeing how the M5 prices have plummeted already they are moving into range. Has anyone driven one and can compare the two? My drive is down B roads so lots of tight corners and short straights. The M3 loved it, will the M5 seem too big? Hopefully off to drive one in a week or so but always interested in the opinion of others, partciuarly those who have had longer in the car.

The M5 is another league with regards to performance and I've just been offered a silver fully loaded 61 plate M5 that was £85000 new for £68000.
I think in a couple of months you would be able to get one for £65000 which seems a good time to buy one.
A load of nearly new f10 M5s have appeared on the BMW website. I was supposed to go and look at one on Saturday. Are they really shifting for £68k? If so, I may be buying one sooner than planned.I think in a couple of months you would be able to get one for £65000 which seems a good time to buy one.
Yes prices on the M5 demos have moved and there are deals to be done.
I pick mine up later this week.
My view is that the prices will be down to mid £60's by the end of the June quarter, maybe lower, but due to impending ski holiday and opportunity for an epic journey to the Alps in the new car, didn't want to wait.
Interesting view on Top Gear last night. 'Best car in the world' comment may encourage dealers to hold their prices.

Well they could try but TG also said that the "problem" with the M5 was that the standard 5 Series was so good that it's hard to justify an extra £30k over a 530d. In other words it's too expensive. I might agree with that regarding the new price but it would be a lot of car for £65k.Well, yes can't disagree with that and a lot of thing JC says are designed to get attention but the fact is, lots of people listen. The fact that the BMW AUC site is now flooded with nearly new M5s suggests the price is only going one way, and that's South. Seems like the days of over subscribed new models with a premium price and a waiting list are over (for now). These must all be dealer registered cars to hide the fact nobody was buying new ones. It's going to be a lot of car for the money in 6-9 months.

I agree with this, I hope I'm wrong but there doesn't seem to be the same 'appetite' for these kind of cars anymore in the UK. I don't think they will sell in anything like the numbers they did during the boom years.China, Russia etc are where these kind of cars are going to get their sales in the future (in my opinion.)
Hi, I can offer some opinion on both. Like you I have owned an E92(DCT)M3. Loved the car, didn't love the fuel bills
I was lucky enough to take a jaw droppingly stunning silverstone M5 out for an extended test drive over the weekend just gone. I should qualify I am not an interested buyer (and was looking at X5s) but my best mate works at a local dealer and it was quiet. My simple comparison is that the M5 feels significantly heavier pulling away, less nimble(obviously), and noticeably heavier steering. I also didn't rate the sound much. The M3 sounds better. When it gets going its probably faster than the M3 but I didn't "feel" that much and IMHO it needs to be in a straight line to feel/see the comparison. The M3 would be more fun on B roads IMHO.
So having driven the M5, and if I had the money I would take another M3. The M5, for me, was an M3 with less finesse and even more top end speed that you would never ever use on a public road day-to-day - indeed the M3 has more than enough.
Interestingly the local dealer sold the car the day after, marked up at £75k with 2k miles on the clock. They have only sold one other car to date at £84k list.
Hope that may help a little.

I'll bookmark this thread and revisit in 2 years - I think 30k will be about right myself
I'm not in agreement with the depreciation curve 'really kicking in' after two years either. I mean as soon as its registered you lose the 20% VAT *

- Of course this rationale does not apply to specialist LE cars and the like...

The M5 prices will fall very hard and very fast - they always do.
Expensive big saloons always have and always will.
I reckon 30k in 2 years time for an F10 M5.
Hope so, I'm looking at keeping my E61 for three years and then getting into an F10 IF and a big IF the touring version is a similar price.Expensive big saloons always have and always will.
