Right, so now I know that it is possible to get more than 200 miles out of a tank in an E61 M5. Driving at slightly over 100mph for an extended period, I got around 420KM from a tank (~260 miles). Quite impressive really. Hooning round in M Mode, never getting out of 3rd gear, really doesn't do much for fuel consumption.

Oil consumption is now intriguing me - Car was slightly less than fully topped up when I left, but not much. Overnight ferry, a couple of hours @ 148KM/H on cruise and the oil level warning is on. I swear the car must have used 3/4 litre of oil in 150 miles. Used the AWESOME feature on the Satnav to find the nearest BMW Garage (was feeling somewhat nervous about oil usage, didn't want to risk using the wrong stuff), brought 2 1 litre bottles of the right stuff. (try pronouncing Huile and getting a Frenchman to actually understand you). Obviously 1 bottle went straight in - 20 mins later and all is looking fine. Drove around for a few days, oil didn't drop at all. Drove back today (6 hours @ ~150 - ~170KM/H) and NO Oil used at all. I really don't understand this. It's as if the engine reaches a certain value, drinks the oil, then waits another interval.

I reckon the E61 is limited to 275Km/h, rather than 175MPH - can anyone confirm this?

Also - out of interest - does anyone know how the French Police define "Rain" - The speed limit changes when it's raining. Does this mean a few drops of water on your windscreen, or actually bucketing down? I realise that the question is probably pointless, because if they've stopped you, they're going to do you, I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the actual definition is.

Hi mate.

Ref fuel - Ive had 340 miles out of a tank sat at 68mph driving back from Leeds on a quiet road. Normally however i achieve no more than 220 miles to a fill. As i dont drive more than 100 miles at a time normally I only put 1/2 a tank in and i usually get 100 to 120 miles out of that.

Ref oil useage - the M5 uses oil at a faster rate when doing higher speeds. Fast road drivers will see the car use a litre every 1000 miles, maybe even slightly less if its hooned everywhere. For those of us who drive around at 30 to 60mph most of the time you can expect to add a litre every 2k to 3k. My average is a litre every 3k currently as i spend most of my time on the 50mph routes with the odd blast here and there. If your oil level suddenly dropped over 150 miles then i wouldnt worry too much, especially if after adding a litre its nacting normally. Its probably just the guage jumping, just as fuel guages do. Every week or so i do an oil level reset just to calibrate the system. You can do it via the idrive or the DIS.

Ref the limiter - 275kmh is approx 171mph so not far out of the 175mph TG E61 M5 test speed. All E61's had a secretly raised limiter as standard, as does the facelift E60 M5's. Pre-facelift E60's were tied at 155mph as per the handbook.

I agree with Eddie!

Eddie.....sad to see your car up for sale.....it will be a brilliant buy for some lucky so and so.....going down the C63 route?

I'm thinking about a change after three glorious years with the E60.....but I'm worried that I'd be changing just for the sake of it.....I'm sure you know what I mean!

Perhaps I'll go for an AMG for a couple of years, then get back to M5 land with an LCI F10.....best laid plans and all that, eh?

Good luck with your next set of wheels!

Not selling now mate, can't face it. The advert is just there because I cannot be bothered to remove it. I've driven 10 C63s now and still cannot get on with the box. If the Merc had the 6.2 engine mated to the SMGIII of my M5 it'd be the best car ever created. I really do feel the autobox kills that car. I feel too that the Merc is going to age very quickly also.

That's a very fair point.

The M-transmissions, especially DCT, but even the much maligned SMG III, are clearly superior.

I've only driven one C63....it was OK, great sound, torquey and it looks quite nice, but didn't leave me lusting after it. I'll have a go in one with the performance pack to see if that changes my mind, but it would appear I've got the M5 bug.....love them all and have even been trying to convince her indoors to get an E39 to complement mine.....I still dream about driving an E39!!

I'm glad you've stepped back from the brink....enjoy your beast!!
