Has any one changed one of these. What's it like to do?
And any ideas of cost?

Thanks guys.

No, but out of interest what were the symptons that led to this?

I had one fitted to my E60 M5. The cost would have been £700+ if not for warranty. No symptoms, just one day had the RCOD.

Well it engaged a gear but would just rev ie no drive. But then it was like someone just dumped the clutch and it took off with a massive bang.

It's only done it once but it didn't bring on any lights. So I plugged it in anyway and it says clutch position sensor.

When it happened I was thinking fair eniough the clutch has gone. It's just clicked 100k and as far as I can tell its never been changed.

I think the clutch position sensor is built right into the clutch slave cylinder on the e46 m3 smg. Im not sure the sensor is available separately, so the whole part will most likely have to changed.

See part no 8 (PN: 21522229841 )

Theres a nice picture and description of operation on page 18 in here:

BMW TIS instructions for removal/installing of a new SMG clutch slave cylinder are here:

I would make absolutely sure that it is the position sensor that is broken before spending 200quid (approx) on a unit. Is the car still working ok??

It's been fine since I cleared out the codes. I wonder if the slave cylinder is getting a bit gummed with dust from the clutch. Causing it to stick a bit and confusing the sensor. I might remove it and give it a good clean and grease the pivot.
I might even be able to get some idea of the state of the clutch while I'm in there.
