Sounds a good idea....in principal! However there's a fair bit more too it than that.

It has been done...Im sure I saw a used one with about 90k miles on for sale not so long back. No idea on the quality of the installation though.

I would want to see a cast iron guarantee from the installer that would cover all possible engine mishaps. Have you seen the price of a second hand motor on one of these?

Personally Ive seen too many bad installations on what should be classed as simple conversions (ie 4 cyclinder) to think its going to be worthwile on a beast like an M5.

Also I think how ever much you save on fuel needs to be offset aginat the cost of installation (£3k?-buys an aweful lot of super unleaded) and the devaluation of the car when it comes to sell as I cant see many people wanting to touch an unwarranted M5 unless its really cheap.

If you are trying to save on running costs I would point you in the direction of a 535d.

you could also recommend him a ford focus, as there is just a HUGE difference between M5 and 535d

there are few M5s converted, as many other cars with big V8/10 engines

Yeah but I bet theres not a HUGE difference between an lpg'd m5 and a 535d despite what alot of installers/owners will tell you plus you will get factory reliability, etc from the diesel.

Its not the size of the engine that''s in question, its the complexity. The m5 engine is basically a race car motor and how many of those do you see running lpg?

Big lazy Limos and Suvs work with lpg well, performance cars?...... Im not convinced and Im talking from my own experience having cars lpg converted.

The question you have to ask is: why do I want an LPGd M5?

If its because you'll be doing spaceship mileage then maybe you should look at the 535d. If its because of the cost of fuel then don't buy an M5, period. I see your profile has a Tuscan on it, if it's yours I doubt fuel costs are a worry (unless its got a Rover 1.8 under the bonnet). Other than these 2 reasons I cant see why anyone would want one. The M5 wasn't designed for LPG and you'll only be opening a huge can of worms by venturing into it.

there still is a big difference, sound and speed and feeling is almost the same as with gasoline

its not a race car motor(as it will pass MOT no?), and the motor itself doesn't recognize if its run on gasoline or whiskey, as long as the juice has enough octane(remember LPG has 105-110 at least, knock sensor would be pleased) and energy value(LPG has less energy value but every serious tuner will remap the ECU to compensate for that), plus there is a lot less carbon buildup, you have the dual fuel system so the car is actually more reliable than from factory (if the gasoline pump gets broken you can drive on LPG and vice versa), as for diesel reliability there are just so many things that can go wrong you will never find on M5 (turbos and all the sensors around, DPFs, slushbox and so on and so on)

there is a whole fleet of Palmer Sport M3s that run SOLELY on LPG, every day..on the TRACK

no car is designed for LPG, thats why tuners do a remap, if its cost of the *anything* then he shouldn't buy BMW at all...I never got this BMW diesel thing, it's like taking a beatiful wh.. lady to a worst hostel ever with dirty beds etc. kinda spoils the experience eh?
