M3 E46 Running probs...
Discussion
Hello Pistonheads,
I have an 05 manual M3 which overnight went from driving lovely to serious loss of horsepower & i had no EML light on... Had a diagnostic by my local indy who found no faults, apart from the engine was running slightly cold.... ive had a thermostat fitted today & voila, back to full power... I thought a sensor would have picked this up???? anythoughts???
Also im non SMG with 63k on the clock & presume im on the original clutch... The footpedal seems heavy to me (mind you i havent compared to another M3), is this typical & is the gearchange typically quite slow to select 1st & is generally quite longthrow & notchy??? Or is because im comparing it to my previous S2000!!! There is no sign of clutchslip.. your thoughs are welcome.. Im knew to this forum........

Diagnosis of engine temp is a bit tricky, the sensor works fine, but it can't tell if the engine should be hot at any point, it would just assume it's a cold day.
Newer ECUs might be smart enough to model temperatures, but in your case, it just reads the real temp, and deals with it.
Heavy clutches are an M thing, usually the more powerful a car is, the heavier they make the clutch so they can have something that will take the power without having to fit a massive clutch disc. The boxes can be a bit notchy, a gearbox oil change might help, but you do get the option of trying some fancy oil in there, Redline or Royal Purple were popular, but there is a chance they can change the feel too, possibly for the worst!

te - BMW M engineers tend to have a good feel of things and the oil they recommend is the stuff to be used imho
