I have been toying with the idea of a usuable classic. I'd really like a 20v ur quattro, but I understand that parts are virtually unobtainable. Next choice would be a 993 C2, nice car, still get virtually all the bits to keep it running, but very cramped and I need to get the kids in.

That leaves my other favourite, the E24 BMW M535i. Most are quite expensive now, but I understand that you can get parts still to keep them running, and unlike the hallowed E28 M5, there is a reasonable choice of RHD ones to go at.

Clocked this one over at the classified - am I mad? http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2295185.htm

I'm a bit confused...

e28 M535 or e24 M635?

Oddly, the M535 has the M30 engine (circa 218bhp) the same as the standard (non-M) 635csi.

The M635 has the 286bhp "proper" M engine - the same as the e28 M5.

A good M5 and M635 are about the same pricewise - upwards of £15k. The M5 is rarer (only 187 RHD built).

The M635 you have linked has been for sale for approx 2 years and I wouldn't touch it with a stolen todger.

ETA: any of these (except for the one you linked wink ) are excellent. I've just done a deal for an e28 M5. Awesome engine. To my mind, the M engine is better suited to the 5er than the 6er. The 6er works very well in standard 635 form as a big old grand tourer - I've had two and love them.

Whichever you go for, check for rust. Everywhere.
