Is this the best value E39 M5 on sale, or a misprint?
Discussion
Just browsing the BMW Approved Used Cars website, and came across an E39 M5 at the Country Garage BMW dealer in Nothern Ireland.
The car is 2002 '02' plate with 50,000 miles. It's got a reasonable spec including sat-nav, is in Carbon Black with Caramel leather, and up for £8,950.
Given it will be properly prepared, have the years warranty and main dealer back up, that seems incredible value to me.
People are asking that money for cars with twice the mileage in private sales.

I spoke to them about it. According to BMW records it hadn't been serviced between 2006 and 2012 - although worryingly they didn't seem to realise this until I pointed it out.
Personally, I'd still of bought it as an AUC at that price. The lack of servicing may be explained by the low mileage, it may of done it's 50,000 miles in it's first 4-5 years.nickrex said:

According to the records it had done 20k miles in the 6 years with no service. That said, could have been serviced outside the network - but the service book was offsite with the car so they couldn't check. And I'm still waiting for them to check and tell me the score - but looks like its now sold anyway!
I really quite fancied it but a potential 6 year gap is too much for my own comfort.

That may not be worth the paper it's printed on when it come so an engine issue with a 6 yr history gap...........
I know that BMW can be fussy when renewing an expired warranty, but surely any engine issue on a main dealer car is covered by the AUC warranty ?I spoke to the dealer and they confirmed the car did have an intermediate service by a non-franchise dealer, but they had checked exactly what had been carried out and were satisfied the service items were satisfactory. I don't have specifics about the timing/mileage though.
AUC warranty is an insurance policy, t&c's of which are that the car must have been serviced as per manufacturers recommendations and continue to be so. Even on a low mileage car a 6 yr gap in history means 2 missed services (oil changes every 2 yrs regardless of useage) if the cars had one intermediate service in this time and an issue arose Mondial would be quite within their rights to not payout, AUC or not.
Should the cars even be an AUC given the history?
This is all assuming there is a gap in history.

From what you've said, the warranty isn't worth anything if there is a 6 yr gap in the service history. My assumption was that a main dealer couldn't sell a car as an approved used car if the history didn't check out ?I remember having a bad experience with an Audi (I know, I was young, foolish) where the approved used warranty didn't necessarily cover something as it was excluded because of the insurance-backed nature of the warranty.

Isn't it reasonable to assume the dealer has checked the car and therefore the warranty is valid as an AUC? If I bought it and had problems covered by the warranty and they refused to sort it there would be an almighty argument!
That's what I would have thought... Also just spotted the following on the BMW UK website (in relation to the AUC warranty):bmw said:
...We want you to have total confidence in your car, which is why the warranty is backed by BMW, not third party insurers, and even covers the battery and exhaust...
I'll just put this out there,

3. Full service history
Only BMWs which have been maintained in strict adherence to BMW servicing recommendations can qualify as Approved Used BMWs. In addition, any BMW with a service due within 4,000 miles or displaying less than three service interval lights has the appropriate service carried out prior to delivery. The only exception is where the vehicle has the benefit of a service package where the requirement is reduced to 1,000 miles or one service light.

Thanks - good spot. Presumably this means the car must comply in order to be sold as Approved Used ?

I never knew about the MOT cover, seems quite handy in case of the older cars in the main dealer network...If you have an MOT test carried out within 12 months from the date of your car order (and no more than 30 days before the due MOT date), then your BMW MOT Cover will cover you against the unexpected costs of any necessary repair or replacement of specified components.
