Hi!

We all love our cars and fuel costs will not really stop us, but.....

Almost £100 a pop, twice a week (occasionally thrice) is beginning to make me wince......the cumulative effect is quite shocking when I look at the figures.

Of course, I'm using my car for pleasure (never for the daily grind) and enjoying it.....could never be one of those 5000 miles a year types!

So I was wondering.....am I normal compared to the crew on here, or am I one of the more extreme nutters?

£55 top up (40 litres of a 55 litre tank), 2-3 times a week, doing 20-25k a year of business/commuting/fun driving.

I don't do much driving (live a block from work...) maybe 8k.
Fill up costs > £60, can be over £90 when petrol > £1.45 and I run it empty. I have still frightened myself at the end of the month when the cc bill comes through though.

Normal month looking at about £350, but have seen an £800. Which I think is absurdly high for the amount of miles I travel smile My biggest issue is not with the car, but more the oil companies massive profit (petrol price higher than when there was that spike in crude price in 2008 and crude price significantly lower) and the governments support for high prices. If they want a green tax then tax the oil companies, not us! We already pay for it in so many other ways.

Rant over smile

Man maths required.....

For every 100 miles you do per week, at £6 per gallon, changing from your 15 or 20 mpg Mcar to a 50 mpg Ford Fiesta will save you £28 or £18 per week.

I do about the average of 250 miles a week (at c20 mpg) so I could save £45 per week on petrol. Doesn't sound like a good enough reason to change a lifetime habit smile

As i get a lift to work during the week my car is only really a weekend and PH meet motor. 30 litres / £45 / 100 miles a week is my average. Not sure £200 a week would go down well with SMWBO.

I am not rich, and I'm getting about 3 weeks from £100 in my 525i. It is making me consider dusting off the old bicycle, but 525i + bicycle is still preferable to me than 600 miles per month in a diesel Mondeo!

ouch thats a killer mate. i have a pretty relaxed attitutde to spending money on petrol as its the enjoyment factor that we all got from these cars, othewise we'd all have diesel mercs, but at those costs mate id consider a smoker for the daily grind. my m5 sits outside pretty much monday to saturday and gets used for fun and weekend and longer family runs, otherwise i use an old golf or my old porsche. hope youve got a good loyalty scheme on the cc or the petrol station

Reminds me that my friend ran a 120d alongside his E60 M5 as a daily runabout.

The M5 had only done about 15,000 miles and was mint when he sold it at 3 years old - even though I didn't like the gearbox, often thought I should have bought it.

These replies have got me a wee bit worried!

I am on first name terms with my V-Power friends, who just smile.

Mind you, I'm getting better with age.....used to do in two tanks of Optimax in an Evo on a Saturday afternoon.....those were the days!

Oh for a fuel card!!

Although I can't claim the £2k a month crown I do count my blessing for having a fuel card. However it doesn't equate to "free fuel"...contrary to populate belief.

Depending on your point of view you either get a massive fuel discount or totally hammered by the taxman.

Why? Well, at the end of each year my fuel card bill goes onto my tax code so I earn less before being taxed. Not too bad as I've not had to pay at the pump so all is still (relatively) good.

However (as we all know) most of the cost of fuel is tax. Fuel duty. But as the figure recorded against my tax code is the full pump price it means my company starts by paying the fuel bill at the pump (the fuel card bill) but then the tax man comes after me and taxes me on the same fuel card bill my company has already paid (which was mostly tax in the first place) so we're actually paying taxed twice.

The silver-lining in the cloud is that thankfully I can claim business miles back to reduce the impact on my tax code and if I do enough business miles it appears as "free fuel". Although in real terms it isn't because the 'calculator' includes running costs per mile...not just fuel.

Is that just for yourself for pleasure driving or does that include commuting and your missus fuel also?

If thats just your fuel bill for hooning you need to get yourself another hobbie.......fast!

It's virtually all pleasure driving, usually longer journeys.

I feel that, in the current climate, blowing sooo much money on fuel is a tad embarrassing, hence my post.

So I will try to restrict myself from now on, allowing only one tank for each week.

We will see....

I do almost 20,000 miles pa in my M5, the cost is the cost and as there is no getting away from it I try not to worry about it. What irks me is having to stop so often.
