Test driving E60 M5: Suggested settings
Discussion
I may do a part-exchange tomorrow of my X3 with an E60 M5 (2007 LCI) from a BMW dealer with 2 years warranty.
Apart from a test drive of an E46 M3 SMG many years ago, I have absolutely no experience with the SMG, so would be grateful for a suggested set-up of the settings that would allow me to judge if an M5 would be a suitable everyday car (well, used for long distance cruising): P500, manual, S5? Lifting the throttle on up and down-shifts?

Sounds about right, (going by M6 experience) try feathering the throttle on upshifts rather than completely lifting and you should get a smooth change and also if you have a slight delay before applying it again (this is for town/normal shifts not flat out). Try it in drive to see how it is for comparison but I don't think you'll use it for long! I'm sure it will be fine for long distance cruising, only downside will be the short range on a tank of petrol but I was managing 300ish when sitting at 80-85 thingmejigs
