325/330ci convertible transmission

I am looking at buying a e46 convertible over the winter for next year.
My first choice is the 330ci,and am wondering manual or auto.
I haven't drove an auto for years and my head tells me manual,but are the auto's any good.
The last time I drove an auto, I was always constantly thinking, come on you should be changing up a gear now,it never changed when I thought I would have, if driving a manual.
When I come to buy I will drive the car obviously,but was wondering your experience of BMW auto's before not even bothering to look at autos. Many thanks...
