Hi All,

Looking for a bit help / information from the M Power fraternity.

I'm planning on fitting an S50B30 motor into my range rover classic rally car to enable the grant of a Competition Logbook.

I was wondering if there is much in the way of bolt-on power upgrades/ECU mods available.

Ideally i'd like to fit the B32 but it wouldn't comply wit the MSA regs if i did so.

I'm looking at buying a good used motor complete with loom etc and have been keeping my eye out on ebay. Any suggestions?

your help fellow PH's is as always greatfully recieved.

Cheers E-B

Depends on the results really. For starters, i'd like to equal the output of an Evo 3.2L lump, so around the 320hp mark. Initially i'd be looking at bolt on/remapping for the 3.0 and in the future - i could go to a grand or so on mods. It all depends on the results.

I don't think you'll get a lot from a remap, I'd look at improving the air intake for a little more power. Avoid anything that raises the rev limit if you like having big end bearings.

3.2 Sump and oil pick-ups for reliability. 3.2 head if you can source one - better design and bigger valves. Schrick 284 cams. Carborn Fibre Air Inlet, remove the MAF and run Alpha-N or similar. Keep the stock manifolds but changing the exhaust system can net small gains - biggest improvement is weight saving though. Stock system weighs a tonne. That lot, with a decent tune might net you @350bhp. The rest of the engine will need to be in tip top condition though.

You can remove the Vanos and lock the cams, providing your chosen ECU can run it. With being a rally car, you may want to keep the Vanos for the low down torque improvement.

TBH, a grand isn't really going to get you much of what I've listed, unless you are very lucky in sourcing second hand parts. The cams will make the biggest single difference but you'd be better spend what cash you have on making sure the stock components are all working as they are, the valve clearances have been checked, all sensors working, hoses and pipes replaced etc. That won't be cheap on it's own but will give you peace of mind and ensure that you get the best from any future mods. Cheap things like fan deletion and lighter pulleys are worth doing for the little cost.

You can see 380+bhp but it will cost you a small fortune.

Fantastic engine but i'm curious to know why you would choose something with relatively little torque to power a Ranger Rover; I'm sure your classic is much lighter than standard but 236lb-ft isn't much. Is a big displacement Rover V8 or a small block Chevy ( 5.7L ) an option ?

You're right it is much lighter than standard - in fact i have managed to remove approximately 100kgs out of the bodywork alone. I not needing low down torque so much as mid to high end. The current V8 (standard 3.9) is probably chucking out 165/175hp (tired) and seems to spend most of its time at 4-5000rpm, but to obtain a Stage Rally Logbook from the MSA the engine needs to have a maximum of 6 cylinders and be either 3.0l max with a multivalve head or 3.5l max without.

i have reduced the final drive gearing to give a better pickup as Land Rover did when they fitted the M52 2.8l unit into Defenders in South Africa.
