Last weekend I dropped the barge off at my dealer on the way to going on holiday after the car had shown signs of that odd little wobble during cold start the day before. After my initial topic the issue faded away, probably because i was using the car almost daily and the weather had settled. When it struggled to idle before my hols i bit the bullet and took it in for a check up.
Result: I picked the car up today on the way home from the airport. The car needed a complete Vanos overhaul. I havent seen the breakdown of what they did yet as thats coming in the post but my service rep said it needed a complete new Vanos system and flush through of the fluid along with a couple of other bits and bobs. All done under warranty of course!
Cost - £54 for the new MOT they did yesterday and another big job covered by the quite honestly amazing warranty. I cannot rate my dealer highly enough either, such smooth handling during all my visits. A few crates of Stella for the workshop and service team in return from me can only help in the future.

IIRC the lumpy idle where a vanos is involved is usually solenoid failure on the exhaust bank.
They are energised in the low rpm state and are de-energised later in the higher rpm altering valve lift as rpm increases. So if they go open circuit then they fail in the higher lift/duration state. The usually means lumpy idle but fine running when driving.
There is also the option of me being completely incorrect
Either way, good job it is all sorted
