newbie questions
Discussion
hi, just a few questions if you can help. car is an e36 m3 convertable 1998. i have owned for 2 weeks now.
1, i dont have heat coming out of heater even on 32deg.
2, i have a straight through exhaust, will it pass mot or do i need to source cat section.
3, is traction switchable on/off as mine doesnt seem to be.
4, can i get a bmw owners manual, as the one that should be in the wallet is missing and been replaced with another.
5, intermitent brake light passenger side, wireing and bulbs seem fine but getting message on display to check manual.
6, any recomendations on where to source a set of springs (standard as i cant get car off drive without chocks at present) i think currently reduced by about 40mm
many thanks in advance for any help or info

Can't answer all of your questions but E36 m3 doesn't have traction control, the light warning is quite common my evo used to do it all the time for no reason
With regards to springs I used the eibach ones which were IMHO a reasonable upgrade for the money

The heat issue could be a massive air lock in the matrix, or a heater valve that has failed closed assuming the cars temperature is stable at 'horizontal' and no overheating issues from the engine.
It will not pass the MOT as the CAT is missing, does depend on who you know though.
Owners manual, probably pdf files online if you do a search or ebay.
Bulbs out, I'd get a pair of matched (quality) bulbs and replace both as a pair, thw bulb out warning works i resistance so different resistance left to right can cause an error warning.
Eibach Pro Springs as mentioned above.

hi andy thanks for your reply, strange thing with rear lights when just ignition on the brake lights work. when engine running 50/50 wether they do or not and after a short run they dont and brake warning is displayed. It has after market reverse censors, also not working i am thinking it is all the same problem/cause. I will look into the eibachs cheers. With regards to springs I used the eibach ones which were IMHO a reasonable upgrade for the money

Hi Dev,engine seems a fine temp just under mid, 90 ish. I will have to get a manual to see if matrix is bleedable and to investigate valves as i wouldnt have a clue where to start, must do something though as no fun this time of year with no heating. It will not pass the MOT as the CAT is missing, does depend on who you know though.

I thought it might need cat, been looking on net and think i can get a salvage one reasonably priced.
I will try bulbs 1st,easy and cheap 1st option before ripping trim out.

This is what the HV looks like,
it is located on the right handside of the engine bay as to look down into it at the back near the coolant expansion tank.
Unplug the electrical connector on the HV and see if this makes a difference.
ETA, it's mounted in the engine bay 'silver cylinder' up.

hi dev < unpluged and ran for a while didnt seem to make any difference> what should have happened surely it couldnt work unplugged could it. the connector that plugs in with the three wires is in poor shape but all cables are making connection as far as i can tell. is there a good book i should get to assist in jobs i wish to do on the car. suspension/heating will be first on list.
